american idol she is hot.

a nice article on her

HAIKU - Camile Velasco, an 18-year-old Haiku resident and a waitress at the International House of Pancakes in Kahului, is one of the final 32 contestants on "American Idol."

She joins two other Hawaii residents who've survived the initial judging for the national singing competition and the acidic criticism of judge Simon Cowell on the popular Fox TV series.

Velasco was not available for comments as she and other contestants are under contract not to give media interviews until the week they perform as part of the final 32. The other remaining Hawaii contestants are Jasmine Trias, a 17-year-old Maryknoll High School senior, and 21-year-old Jonah Moananu.

Out of an original field of 80,000 contestants, Velasco was one of 117 to be invited to Hollywood for more auditions in the fall. Aside from Honolulu, where Velasco received praise from judges, auditions were held in New York, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

On the program Wednesday night, Velasco could be seen in the background at times, but she was not one of the featured performers.

She and the other contestants will now be featured in a series of shows beginning Tuesday over the Fox network, where they will be judged by viewers who call in their vote for their favorite singer from a group of eight. Just two from each group of eight will go on to the finals.

Velasco's mother, Rennie West, said she accompanied her daughter to the competition in Hollywood, which was "the most intense thing I ever went through."

West said she'd sit in the audience and listen as the judges critiqued the contestants' performances. Cowell was particularly brutal, calling performers "ghastly" and "hideous" in his thick British accent, she said.

"You just don't know," she said. "You think that's what he's going to tell your child."

But West said Cowell had positive things to say about Velasco, although she couldn't reveal exactly what those were other than "it was more positive than what they had to say to her in Honolulu."

West said she also performed as a child, but she didn't have her daughter's strength or perseverance to become a professional performer.

"It makes me feel really proud," she said. "I kind of really envy her."

West said she almost advised her daughter to quit the competition because it was so nerve-racking and Velasco was getting only four hours of sleep each night.

But she said her daughter later told her she wouldn't give up because she wants to be a singer and share her music.

West said her daughter has been singing since she was 4 years old.

"I could see she could really carry a tune," she said, although she pushed Velasco to succeed academically and pursue a professional career as a doctor, a nurse or an engineer.

West said Velasco showed an intense interest in music and little in academics.

She attended Seabury Hall and St. Anthony Junior Senior High School, but Velasco dropped out of school during her junior year at St. Anthony and earned her general educational development diploma instead.

"She started making music, playing piano," although Velasco has no formal training in music, West said. "She would listen to music and try to play it on the piano without notes."

Later, she could play without notes, she said. "That's when I realized she's very talented."

West said Velasco has composed and written lyrics for three songs.

"She did everything," she said. "I gave up at that time. I forgot about having a child that's a doctor anymore because that's not what she wants to do."

Velasco has worked as a waitress since she was 13 years old at IHOP, a restaurant bought in 1998 by West and her second husband, James. West said her first husband, Camile's father, is serving with the U.S. Navy in Japan.

Velasco was born in Manila on Sept. 1, 1985. When she was 2 years old, she moved with her family to Honolulu and lived there until she was 12 when her family moved to Maui.

West said that as the "American Idol" series goes on, contestants will be broken up into four groups of eight, each competing in separate programs. Viewers will vote for two finalists out of each group of eight, and the judges will pick two wild-card contestants for a final group of 10 contestants, she said

I really liked her. It's a shame that one single performance can make or break you in the competition, but I guess it's supposed to be that way.

LOL, that's cold man. Do they have IHOPs in Maui?

First off, I don't watch American Idol. Had family in last year so I saw a few epiosdes of Idol 2.

But I think if someone is really talented they don't need some pompus Brit to pave their way to fame... even if he owns a production company or whatever it is. I mean after all look what happened to wass'his name? The 2nd place guy in the first American Idol. I heard he lost a contract. Hell has the 1st American Idol winner really made it? Not sure on that one since I don't keep up....

------- digression --->

Last year there was a really good country music verion of American Idol on USA network called Nashville Star. I don't like country music much, but I really enjoyed this. Same as Idol, but a different level of talent. These guys and gals write, sing and play their own music as part of the competion. And also IMO there's just something about a girl playing guitar and singing... Very Happy Twisted Evil

Just did a google and found they are starting the Season II on Saturday, March 6 at 10PM/9C. If you like Idol, you'll probably like this http://www.usanetwork.com/nashvillestar/ OR if you don't like American Idol (like me) You'll probably like Nahsville Star.

igetxm4free, I agree she is hot, but not the best in the competition so far. That would have to be Will Hung, who is already America's choice for American Idol.
