'90s On 9 Playlist

Okay, ladies and gentlemen, here is the ongoing playlist for the post-merger '90s channel: 636 songs so far. Big whoop. We know that the '60s channel plays almost no adult-contemporary artists or country crossovers...and the '70s channel plays almost no adult-contemporary artists or country crossovers...and the '80s channel plays almost no adult-contemporary artists or country crossovers. Well, guess what? The '90s channel plays almost no adult-contemporary artists or country crossovers. What a surprise! Only two of Celine Dion's sixteen top-40 hits of the decade have been played since the merger, and only two Michael Bolton songs (one time each). To its credit, though, '90s On 9 plays quite a few low-charting songs and even four that never charted. And in July 2010 they finally started adding a few songs to the playlist. Wake me if or when they reach 1000.

Oh boy, I finally got around to adding some more songs to the list, including Alice in Chains' first chart hit, No Excuses; the Smashing Pumpkins' first chart hit, Today; and Pearl Jam's Black, which got to #3 on the rock chart but failed to make the pop chart. The post-merger '90s On 9 channel continues to focus on the rock hits while ignoring most of the adult contemporary artists and all of the country artists; what the channel plays is the "MTV version" of the decade.

It's just me but I can't listen to the 90's on 9 and my reason is quite specific. For a period of about 5 years I worked as an overnight DJ/Programer for a Hot AC station and that was in the mid 90's so almost all of the stuff played on the 90's on 9 I spun either as a current or as a recurrent. Needless to say one gets sick of the stuff when you are the one spinning it all the time.
