Ok, so I've purchased a 2005 Ford Focus (which I pick up this Friday). It has a CD player that doesn't appear to have a line in jack. (I can't really tell from the photos I've seen of the car.) My current car has a tape deck. I'm not a fan of using an FM modulator as a permanent solution as I don't like giving up sound quality like that. I'd love to hardwire the dock into the radio. I'm told the best way to do this is to use a PIE adapter.

The problem I'm running into is that it appears that there is a different PIE adapter for each brand. I have no clue what stereo comes standard in Fords. I also have no clue how to actually wire the thing. I'm assuming I have to get the stereo out of the dash (though I have no clue how this is done) and then plug one end of the cable into the PIE adapter on the back of the radio (assuming it even has one) and the other end into the line in jack on my radio?

I confess that I'm clueless as to how any of this is done and how difficult it is to do. Is it worth hiring someone to do this or is it simple enough that anyone can do? I'm a computer tech so I have some technical skills, but I'm not an audio person at all and have no clue what I'm getting myself into.

The PIE adaptor is used with the ICECREAM adapter for ala mode.

I had one of those PIE adaptors in my F150. It was easy to install, and worked pretty well. Then the left side dropped in volume. Rather than buying another one, I ponied up a few bucks more and bought an aftermarket receiver that controlled both satrad and the iPod.

With that said, if you go to the PIE website, they have information there about all cars and their stereos. Just input your brand, model, and what kind of stereo you have and they'll tell you what adaptor will work.

All you need is Ford, Focus, and the year, followed by factory stereo usually. You'll need to know if there is a DVD or CD changer, but that's self-evident.

Installation is accomplished by removing the radio from the dash, unplugging the cable from the radio, plugging it into the PIE adaptor, and then plugging the PIE cable into the radio. It's that simple.

I wish you better luck than I had with mine.

I have the PIE interface for an aux input in my Impala and it has worked great for several years.
I have the TERK interface for the XM and everything works just fine...

They're basically a circuit that emulates a CD Changer or the actual factory XM receiver and makes your HU think that it's there for real. It interfaces between factory and non-factory equipment.
