I read a forum that was hoping a new firmware download would be coming out last week, but didn't happen. Probably has something to do with what you're testing. Hulu and Youtube have been rumored for a while. |
I'm not supposed to talk about it. There's a lot of content being added, but Hulu is definitely not one of them.

Didn't think so. The rumor for that apparently came from it being mentioned in a review in Playboy, of all places.
Any guess when it will be released?
I guess a lot of this stuff is already confirmed. Looks cool.

Not sure how long they will keep it for testing. Beta just started last week, and some of it is still pretty buggy from what I have used. They usually have us test a few beta builds before releasing it to the public.

The disc uses BD-Live to connect to Netflix. They have an exclusive contract with Microsoft for built-in Netflix software, so until that deal ends, it won't be built into the PS3 system.

The Netflix PS3 disc works great. Runs smoothly, flipping from title to title has a nice transition, can view categories like the xbox, and is amazingly fast. HD Streams take maybe 2 seconds to buffer and begin playing. That's a good 20 seconds faster than the Roku box.
My only gripe is that it forces 720p. I don't understand why. The PS3 has plenty of power to upconvert to 1080p. Even the Netflix built into my Samsung BD player upconverts to 1080p.

I got to play with Netflix on the Playstation over the weekend. I was very happy with it. Sure, the resolution is closer to regular DVD than to Blu-Ray, at least for now. (Probably just as well, what with Comcast getting antsy over bandwidth limits because of stuff like this. For example, I could see some families with kids with cable internet getting into trouble with their ISP because the kids were live-streaming a Netflix film at 1080i each day, even the same one. Obviously, they'd be better off getting the disk in the mail from Netflix than downloading it again and again and crossing their ISP's limit on monthly downloads.)
But Netflix on PS3 on my HDTV looks much better than Netflix live streaming over the web on my PC monitor, so I'm happy with it. I've usually preferred getting the DVD in the mail from Netflix than webstreaming Netflix because I only have a 19" 4:3 LCD monitor on my PC and Netflix on it looks inferior to DVD. Now, if the film I want from Netflix is available on the web, I'll download it to the Playstation rather than pull a disk by mail, which of course Netflix is hoping we'll do to save on postage and DVD costs. For me, the downside is that fast-forwarding and rewinding to jump to a different scene is slower than I'd like (and much slower than a DVD)... but it's not a deal-breaker.
