|
|
Hi,
Yesterday, for about an hour, I periodically monitored the display of the song currently played at the time and upcoming songs on the MTV 50s Hits channel. The diverse selection of songs on the channel, which ranged from Pop Songs, Country, and Rock and Roll, pleasantly surprised me, particularly so since MTV has the channel listed on their site! I was not able to actually listen to the "50s Hits," since I was at a computer lab in school at the time. I did see the channel played Phil Harris' "The Thing", songs by Sam Cooke, Joanne Stafford, Teresa Brewer, Duane Eddy, and some songs by Rock and Roll groups.
Rhapsody has quite an extensive database of songs, though I do not know applicable that is to their various radio stations. I typed in Patti Paige and saw several of her songs listed on the site.
Sincerely,
Walter |

It hasn't been easy to locate an all 1950's channel that was like the old 50's on 5 and I will still try to locate more of these channels. |

I know I read this on another thread, but let's not leave out Big Oldies Chicago.
http://www.bigoldieschicago.com/
Per Cliff Edwards: owner and program director
Cliff: Most FM oldies stations have a playlist of between 400 and 500 songs and also which is why listeners get tired of hearing the same songs over and over and over again. I also think that is why FM stations with oldies formats are up and down, then up, then down again in ratings. Listeners burn out on those 400 or 500 songs and try other formats...they don’t hear anything they like, so the come back to those 400 or 500 oldies....until they burn out again.
There is a crazy programming saying that really irks me. "Its not what you dont play that can hurt you" If you think about it that why those 400 or 500 songs are "safe" oldies. Nothing too dated, nothing too heavy, nothing too black... nothing outside the safe zone.
We have a 5000 song playlist. Now all do not get played with the same frequency but we are playing tons of stuff you just wont hear on FM.
BigOldiesChicago.com also plays a "Featured Song" every half hour. Cliff describes these as "great songs that FM oldies stations just won't play".
These songs include:
1 All Cried Out Dusty Springfield
2 D'Yer Maker Led Zeppelin
3 Hold On Ian Gohm
4 I Confess The New Colony Six
5 If I Could Reach You The Fifth Dimension
6 It's Gonna Be Alright Gerry & The Pacemakers
7 It's OK The Beach Boys
8 I Wanna Meet You The Cryan Shames
9 Not a Second Time The Beatles
10 Roses and Rainbows Danny Hutton
11 Rubber Bullets 10CC
12 Somebody's Been Sleeping 100 Proof Aged in Soul
13 Teenage Lament 74 Alice Cooper
14 Loveland Charles Wright
15 Master Jack Four Jacks and a Jill
16 Share Your Love with Me Bobby Blue Band
17 She Comes to Me The Chicago Loop
18 Son of Hickory Hollers Tramp OC Smith
19 Tennessee Bird Walk Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan
20 Wildflower Skylark |

Here is another site that focuses on all five decades
The Radio.com:
http://www.theradio.com/genres.cfm?id=8
"50's Number 1's" covers the entire decade. "Perry Como, Patti Page and an emerging superstar named Elvis Presley. All the Number-One songs from the decade that gave birth to Rock and Roll"
The "Radio Gold" channels for each decade contain a deep playlists as well
Enjoy |

| Looks pretty much like your typical '70-'80s so called "oldies" FM station. Sure hasn't a thing to do with anything 1950s. |

To help you out with your fifties needs:
A Different Kind Of Oldies Shows:
http://dkosmediaus.com/DKOS-index.htm
According to their website:
A D*K*O*S started out by playing those forgotten and overlooked records from the 50's 60's and 70's. We also specialized in presenting historical elements of American popular music every week. In recent months we have become an almost entirely Doo-Wop show because of our relationship with The Doo Wop Cafe.
The last 4 shows are available for you to download so you can listen on your portable player. You can also hear it on your home or work computer by either On Demand streaming or downloading it. We also have an archive of older shows you can also download. |

| The Doo Wop Cafe might be a pleasant diversion if it were not for the fact it is a linking disaster. Someone sure needs to get busy and rehash things from the main page down. |

Have mentioned the "Time Warp Top 40" with Jason Miller previously. Countdown using the Billboard charts. http://timewarptop40.blogspot.com/
Excellent program. This week he played not only the Lettermen's "The Way You Look Tonight" from this day in 1961, but also the original version form 1935 by Fred Astaire. Lots of rarities, flip sides, and breaking hits from cities across America. Also old ads. Commercial free and on demand on Abie's Doowop Taxi. http://www.doowoptaxi.com/ |

While I can't find a direct link, 1Club.FM has a few channels which do a decent job of presenting stuff 50's on 5, and at times Siriusly Sinatra and the 40's on 4 has overlooked.
Go to www.shoutcast.com, and search for either:
Malt Shop, Jazz Masters, Easy Listening channel, sentimental journey, and/or Vegas baby! Malt Shop especially does a marvelous job of mixing the two halves of the 50's fairly evenly. |
