This is the latest message I have been sent:
| Quote: | Ryan,
Something I should point out. The chart I sent you does not illustrate that temporary terrestrial repeaters placed in New York and other select east coast cities are going to overlap the west coast satellite signals. This should be not be much of an issue unless the XM 1.0 tuner is receiving both satellites and this temporary repeater at the same time. The tuner itself will not indicate a terrestrial signal, it will simply look as if it is seeing both satellites. |

I asked for further explanation:
| Quote: | | The Satellite at 115 degrees west longitude or “sat 2” on the charts I supplied are nearly impossible to receive in New York, a temporary terrestrial repeater network will be in place in certain east coast areas that will be on the same frequency as the west coast satellites. This will minimize the impact for some east coast subscribers. This is actually something XM wanted to do a long time ago in favor of expanding bandwidth, But was abandoned after testing because the repeater network could never be built in the mid section of the country due to terrestrial and satellite interfering with each other causing carrier to noise and bit error issues. West Coast subscribers can also have this temporary repeater network running on the same frequency as the east coast satellites. I have no information of where or when these will be running, I am not sure if these repeaters are the same east coast repeaters retuned to output on the west coast satellite frequency or new temp units will be installed during the transition. I hope I cleared things up a little. The 2.0 migration is not going to be an easy one for everybody but it’s not going to be that bad either. SiriusXM is making these changes as pain free as possible, I know its hard to believe sometimes, but they are committed to their customers. |

I am unclear why they need to actually turn the repeaters off. According to the plan they will be using those frequencies for test signals not for actual broadcast prior to 2014/2015. Until that time, they could just turn off 1 repeater around their DC headquarters to test those signals. All other repeaters would function normally.
But SXM has never been good at planning anything. I expect them to endure a fair bit of churn because of this. _________________ XM subscriber since 2005/12/05:- Pioneer Airware (LIFE, wife)

| Thanks to Ryan for his original post and the various updates. Xmfan is a great resource for customers of a sometimes frustrating service. |

I understand the frustration, I'm frustrated, since I'll be stuck listening to my own putrid thoughts all day at work. Ryan's last post seems to hint that some sort of temporary network is possible, if not, a cinched deal at this point. Thank you Ryan for posting, because I'd rather know ahead of time if my radio won't work the way I want it to anymore, earlier than later. _________________ XM-Inno w/BOS

It sounds like the people in the east and west coast (a few select cities, at least) will be fine, but it doesn't sound good for big cities in the middle of the country, like Chicago. It wouldn't be possible to setup a temp repeater network because both SAT1 and SAT2 are received here. _________________ The one and only, XMFan.com!

Well I guess that leaves me out I'm in ABQ, New Mexico, that would explain why I no longer get a repeater signal on my XMp3i, and YES I'm in the middle of no-where however, I do still have FREE XMRO, and a OEM Sirius Radio in my Chevy Truck, guess you can't have it all anymore _________________ SIRIUS XM Edge * XMP3i *SIRIUS XM-Android Smart Phone App* |

Not really. As of now it SHOULD still work. It might be down, it might get fixed. Who knows. This is the way the repeater system has worked for years. So its disingenuous to blame not getting a repeater signal on this. |

I get both SAT1 and SAT2 here in Connecticut. At least that's what the display on my SkyFi2 indicates. |

Lucky you, I don't have any older XM radios, but on the newer ones XMP3i and the ExpressRCi I don't get any more repeater signals, all i get is a 1/3 XM signal, so that tells me something is being tested, or being shut-down or something in my area, maybe they are testing things out for the New SIRIUS XM 2.0 radios, who knows, but something is up _________________ SIRIUS XM Edge * XMP3i *SIRIUS XM-Android Smart Phone App* |

I've rarely if ever been able to get bot SAT1 and SAT2 here in the Chicago area[usually it's one or the other and sometimes neither].

It's not the fact that you cannot get both at the same time, it's because in this part of the country you can get reception from either SAT1, SAT2 or both.
I specifically asked about cities like Chicago experiencing major reception issues in the downtown 'urban canyons', and was told:
| Quote: | | You are correct Ryan, repeater networks in most cities not on the most eastern or western edges of the country will not have repeater coverage during the transition. |

Another tidbit of information.
The following radios are 2.0-Ready:
Audiovox XMp3i
Audiovox XpressRCi
XM Onyx
If you have one of these radios, you will be able to listen to the new 2.0 channels when the service is launched. I've asked about older generations of those radios-- Delphi XpressRC, Audiovox XpressRC and Pioneer XMp3. Even though these radios appear to be the same, they are not 2.0 compatible.
I also inquired about the differences between these existing 2.0-compatible radios and the two new 2.0 radios that were announced during the last corporate earnings call, said to be released by the end of the year. These new models will have expanded Internet capabilities (ie, "personalized" content as previously mentioned in the last earnings call) in addition to receiving the 1.0 and 2.0 channel broadcasts. _________________ The one and only, XMFan.com!

Ryan,
About the 1.0 and 2.0 thing.
The only way that I should be able to tell if I have a RC or RCi is the back will say it right?
Delphi = RC and then Audiovox would = RCi?
I guess this also explains the difference in firmwares for the XMP3 and XMP3i. |
