NABO & NAN Will Conduct Wake-Up Call Outside of XM CEO Panero's Chevy Chase

Home Wednesday Morning -
2ND Demonstration Outside of XM'S D.C. Headquarters at Noon

PHOENIX, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The upscale Chevy Chase, Maryland neighborhood of XM Satellite Radio CEO Hugh Panero will receive a Wake-Up Call this Wednesday morning (August 21) as supporters of The Word Network protest an XM decision to carry the sexually explicit Playboy Radio while rejecting the value positive Word that features urban ministries.

The Wake-Up Call follows a candlelight vigil by 100 singers that serenaded Panero's neighborhood with gospel songs during the candlelight vigil outside of Panero's home earlier this month.

The Wake-Up Call and candlelight vigil are conducted under the leadership of Reverend Horace Sheffield III, CEO of the National Association of Black Organizations (NABO) and president of the Michigan chapter of the National Action Network (NAN).

After the Wake-Up Call, a coalition of ministers and representatives of NABO and NAN will hold a non-violent "TUNE OUT XM" demonstration Wednesday August 21, 2002 outside of the Washington, D.C. headquarters of XM to express their displeasure with Panero's refusal to meet with the alliance.

Instead of Panero, a dozen D.C. police cars greeted NAN/NABO leadership at XM Satellite Radio three weeks ago. Michigan NAN president Reverend Horace Sheffield III said the alliance would not back down in the face of force.

"We have prayed and sang for the soul of Hugh Panero. Some of Hugh's neighbors even joined us in song and prayer. We are a peaceful group that will not back down nor will we be wait-listed by a satellite broadcast entity that feeds on genocidal forces of violence, drugs and the denigration of our women. Panero chose Playboy over The Word. There was room for The Word on XM but XM is hungry for cash, any cash from anywhere. That is why we will visit Panero everywhere," said Reverend Sheffield.

Sheffield said that the direct action movement against XM would escalate to civil disobedience that would include encouraging the African American community to re-evaluate its relationship with companies such as General Motors, Hawthorne Appliances and others that sell or advertise XM products.

The XM Satellite Radio demonstrations are the result of NABO and NAN's national campaign to have the nation's satellite and cable broadcasting industry provide value positive programming for African Americans.

NABO and NAN demonstrations for value positive satellite broadcast programming in Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Denver, and New York have attracted hundreds that marched in protest while some demonstrators were jailed for civil disobedience.

They did the same thing to Charlie Ergen CEO of Dish Network.

Charlie Learned that if you just ignore them they go away.

I think that Hugh should setup a stage in his front yard and hire a bunch of strippers to entertain them! Laughing

I hear that Sirius added their channel "The Word". I can't believe Sirius gave in to these people.

I'm disgusted that Sirius not only added 'The Word' today, but they did it at the expense of the Sci-Fi channel.

This battle is far from over. I'm going to raise hell. Twisted Evil

Maybe I'll get a book deal writing my memoirs of Sirius. Wink

But seriously, I find it disgusting that Sirius agreed to carry their preachy African American power crap. I sure hope that The Word is paying for Sirius to broadcast their feed, and not that Sirius is hosting it for free.

Hey I called Horrace today on his private phone, the number was on one of the message boards. Basically it boils down to they feel they have the right and the argument of free speech. To which I said, I pay for this and I don't think you have the right of free speech. Furthermore I think it is completely right for Hugh to tell these people that they aren't interested, especially when they have the ability to bring in even more cash with Playboy. I also asked what his thoughts would be on an all white channel or Pat Robertson having a network show. He grew very silent. Ultimately I don't think XM will cave in because they know if they do it will set a precedent for other asses who want to get their message out any way they can because nobody watches or listens to them in the first place.

NAN/NABO Ask: After an Upset Panero Exchanged Words With NAN Outside Panero's House Saturday - Did XM Sat Radio CEO Hugh Panero Call NAN's Rev. Sheffield Minutes Later? Caller Claiming to be Panero Condemned Affirmative Action - Said That Sheffield is 'Un-American and Should Go Back to Africa'

PR Newswire ~ September 23, 2002 ~ 7:53 am EST

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- A visibly upset XM Satellite Radio CEO Hugh Panero exchanged words with Reverend Horace L. Sheffield III from Panero's front porch Saturday morning as supporters of The Word Network conducted a silent WAKE-UP CALL II prayer vigil outside of Panero's house.

Sheffield is CEO of the National Association of Black Organizations (NABO) and president of the Michigan chapter of the National Action Network (NAN).

The supporters of The Word Network were protesting an XM decision to carry The Joint, Raw and the sexually explicit Playboy Radio channels contending that such XM channels glorify the cultures of violence, drugs and female denigration while XM rejects the family oriented value positive Word Network.

While Panero stood on his porch, Sheffield asked Panero if Panero would meet to discuss XM carriage of The Word. Panero replied by asking, "Are you Reverend Sheffield?" Sheffield said "yes." Panero informed Sheffield that Panero's wife was being treated for leukemia at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Panero stated that the peaceful non-violent silent prayer vigil was unsettling to Panero's family. Upon learning of Mrs. Panero's condition, Reverend Sheffield led vigil participants in a group prayer for Mrs. Panero.

The Panero/Sheffield exchange was taped by a video crew and will air on The Word Network.

Less than five minutes after departing from Panero's house, Reverend Sheffield said that he received a phone call from a man purporting to be Panero.

"The caller said he was Hugh Panero. The caller raged at me in a racist manner while condemning affirmative action, NAN/NABO and the caller said that I was 'un-American and should go back to Africa.' If the caller was who he said he was, Hugh Panero, then Panero should immediately resign from XM Satellite Radio. GM, Nissan, Volkswagen and other supporters of XM should stop selling XM products until XM changes its racist leadership," said Reverend Sheffield. Sheffield said that he was shocked and disappointed but would continue to pray for Panero and Mrs. Panero.

NAN/NABO crisis management consultant Sam Riddle said that while Panero was upset with silent prayer vigil participants, Panero needed to understand that some of the programming of XM Satellite Radio glorified the cultures of violence, drugs and female debasement.

"Even as we pray for Mrs. Panero, we must ask who will open the door standing strong on the porch of justice to protect and pray for the women that are dehumanized by XM programming that glorifies drug usage, violence and the denigration of women? Dehumanizing makes beating and killing easy," said Riddle.

The non-profit Word Network is the mainstream media broadcaster for African- American ministries and gospel music. The Word content includes ministries, gospel music, talk shows, religious conventions, SCLC & PUSH confabs and serves as the official Super Bowl gospel presenter. Based in Southfield, Michigan, The Word Network offers value positive family programming embraced by millions of African Americans in urban and rural markets. The Word Network is available in 31 million homes in the United States through DirecTV, AT&T, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox, Millennium Digital Media, Charter, Adelphia, Cablevision, RCN, Sirius Satellite Radio and a host of smaller cable operators. Programming from The Word Network is provided to 800,000 men and women in the United States Armed Forces in 165 countries. The Word Network is also providing programming to 75 million households in Africa.

NABO and NAN demonstrations for value positive satellite broadcast programming in Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Denver, Maryland and New York have attracted hundreds that marched in protest while some demonstrators were jailed for civil disobedience.

Hey, in America people can program what they want and how they want it.

Do you really think the CEO of a fledging company is going to berate you over the phone when he just met you in person? If you believe that, I guess you'll believe religion can save you. Oh wait, I forgot what you do for a living.

What a bunch of bullshit.
Havn't these people ever heard of caller ID or *69
I know you can turn off caller ID *73 but most people don't do this.

NTC - News September 23, 2002 Are representatives of NAN's Rev. Sheffield calling XM Radio customers making death threats?

I just received a phone call here at work from a man that said he was working for Reverend Sheffield of the National Association of Black Organizations.
He told me that his group is contacting all XM Radio subscribers to ask them to contact Mr. Hugh Panero "The White Devil" to request the addition of the Word Network to the XM lineup.
I asked him. How did he get my number?
He told me he received a list of all XM Radio subscriber phone numbers as per a written request from Mr. Hugh Panero.

I told him I didn't apreciate him calling Mr. Hugh Panero "The White Devil". I would never donate or help a so called Religious Organization that Spreads hate like yours

He then said "Fuck you" and said I was a dead man and hung up the phone.

I quicly contacted the police. They are now Investigating this person.

XM Says It Won't Cave To Activists' Pressure

"Regardless of the ridiculous tactics of this Detroit group," XM VP/Corporate Affairs Chance Patterson tells R&R, "XM has no plans to carry The Word Network." For months, members of the Detroit chapters of the National Action Network and the National Assn. of Black Organizations have been pressuring the satcaster to carry what the groups call the "value positive" religious programming of The Word Network, but Patterson counters, "XM has unprecedented gospel and Christian programming in its lineup, and we're very proud of it." Meanwhile, Patterson labels as "pure fiction" the activists' recent allegation that someone identifying himself as XM CEO Hugh Panero made racist comments during a phone call with NABO CEO Rev. Horace Sheffield.
