I read somewhere that Infinity has introduced a "free form" format on WNEW ("Blink 102.7") in New York. The article said that (unlike WNEW's "free form" format during the late 1960's and 1970's, this format will be aimed at women. Apparently, they are going to let the disc jockeys choose at least some of the music they play.
I wonder if anyone in or near New York has turned on the station and if they have any comments on it.
I love XM, but it would be wonderful if the FM broadcasters stopped putting on the mindless stuff they have now. Of course, they would also have to cut the commercials to a decent level to get me to listen. |

Trust me, you haven't missed much, especially during the last several years. |

Honestly, I have not listened to 102.7 Blink. I understand that the station combines music with entertainment news and gossip. The station may play five songs in a row, but there is a lot of talk, not to mention yet another talkative morning show and a lot of commericals.

| Seriously that station is in such disarray. I have no idea what format they're trying to push. |

Today's edition of the New York Daily News has article in which Chris Booker, co-host of 102.7 Blink's morning show, shares his views. His co-host is real-life partner Lynda Lopez, sister of actress/singer Jennifer Lopez. The entire article can be found at:
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/ent_radio/story/76069p-70242c.html
Here, I am going to respond to his words.
| Chris Booker wrote: | | If [Lynda Lopez and I] had just started dating, there could be problems, he says. But we've been going out for a couple of years. We know each other. There will be things in our lives we don't talk about on radio, but we know we're a couple with a certain profile. People know Lynda's sister is Jennifer and that we know famous people. |
I wish you the best of luck with Lynda, and I hope your relationship is strong enough to withstand the temptations that are prevalent in the entertainment business.
| Chris Booker wrote: | | We're not a Morning Zoo. We're something different. |
It may be different, but it's still a talkative morning show.
| Chris Booker wrote: | | Radio used to have the thunder. It was live. Radio was where you turned when something was going on. But radio has given a lot of that away to television. It's lost the feeling of what's happening now…We're trying to bring some of the urgency back. We want people to know that if something is happening, we're on it now. |
Well, XM Satellite Radio has already brought the thunder back to radio. Thanks to XM, many people are being informed of what is going on now and in the future. XM radio keeps us on the cutting edge with high-quality digital sound and without the enormous amount of commercials.
| Chris Booker wrote: | | We used to go to bed at 4 a.m. Now that's when we get up. The other morning I started to read something and Lynda said, 'You read that yesterday.' And I said, 'I did? I don't remember.' |
Don't worry. Before you know it, you'll love the early morning. Nightlife sure isn't what it used to be.
| Chris Booker wrote: | | What we do is night-and-day from [my pal] Howard [Stern]. His fans aren't thinking, 'Let's go over to Blink and hear a Justin Timberlake song. I spoke to Howard after I got this offer and he was very supportive. He said, 'It's an opportunity. Do what you gotta do.' He's great. |
Hey, that's what friends are for.
| Chris Booker wrote: | | I'd love to see [102.7 Blink] expand and go national. I'd love to be part of it. |
Don't get your hopes too high. Competition in the New York radio scene is really tough, and I am sure you know it. Hopefully, you have developed a contingency plan in case this does not work out.
| Chris Booker wrote: | | We're less than a week old. We're still figuring out the best way to do things here. |
Here's a tip: Minimize the talk and the commercials, and maximize the music. Other than that, I don't know what else can be done to help make 102.7 Blink the number one station in New York.
I do wish you and Lynda the best in everything you do. |

Aimed at women?
WTF does THAT mean? As a person of the female persuasion, I am REALLY confused as to what a rock & roll station targeted to women would sound like. Is there supposed to be a particular type of rock that appeals more to the generic female?!

|
|
Here is an article I found in today's New York Daily News:
Looks like WNEW format is on the blink
| Quote: | | Steve Kingston has resigned as operations manager and program director of WNEW (102.7 FM), starting an avalanche of rumors that parent Infinity Broadcasting may pull the plug on the star-crossed "Blink" format. |
It doesn't look good.
| Quote: | | The most recent Arbitron ratings showed Blink averaging only 0.7% of the radio audience, dead last among major stations. |
So much for going from worst to first.
| Quote: | | Unofficial reports flew yesterday that Infinity may shuffle some air staff and could adjust its music, either to aim at a younger crowd or challenge the city's No. 1 station, Clear Channel's Lite-FM (WLTW, 106.7 FM). |
Why am I not surprised?
| Quote: | | If "Blink" does disappear, it will be remembered as one more stumble for a legendary station that fell down in the late '90s and can't seem to get up. |
And it never will. WNEW's departure from an album-oriented rock format several years ago was a fatal mistake.
| Quote: | | WLTW program director Jim Ryan, asked yesterday about the rumors of a challenge to Lite, said, "I don't know what they're doing at Blink - and based on the last six months, I'm not sure anyone there knows, either." |
I don't know, either; and, frankly, I don't care. |

|
Infinity has pulled the plug on "The Wave," KKWV in San Francisco, its other "experimental" station, which was also getting extremely low ratings.
I don't know whether that means they also intend to pull the plug on "The Blink." |
