Many centuries ago, our universe was first visited by an interstellar group of accordion playing nomads known as...The Polkarians. Using advanced thermonuclearpolkadynamicthingamabobbery science, these lederhosen skinned beings traveled the stars spreading their gospel of advanced living through polka music. After establishing a colony and a brewery on planet Pluto, these alpine hat sporting musical marvels began broadcasting their cosmic cacophony of polka perfection to all of the galaxy's inhabitants. Now, thru the modern miracle XM's patented "Polkaphonic" sound transmogrifier technology, you can join Special X for six straight hours of polka fueled madness with...The Planet Pluto Polka Party!
Beginning Thursday May 15th on XM 30, Special X.

I listened for a total of over 2 hours on May 15 and 45 minutes May 22. I love everything that I heard. There is some old stuff, instrumental stuff, and odd stuff that is not played anywhere else. The time slot is fantastic, I never expected six hours at prime time.
I had an email discussion with Lou "Special X Shaman" Brutus. He said no one had requested waltzes (obereks), but I think this was a big oversight on XM's part. A typical polka show features lots of waltzes. No one would specifically request waltzes with a polka show, because when we asked for a polka show, we assumed that waltzes would be included.
I heard almost no modern recordings of typical polkas. Polkacide is OK, but they need to be balanced with more Eddie Blazoncyk and Jimmy Sturr. And Eddie and Jimmy need to be balanced with newer artists who are not as well known.
I don't really "get" the whole "Pluto brewery" thing. The concept has the potential to be funny, but they don't flesh out the concept enough to make it funny. A live announcer would help. On the other hand, they don't host African music from a grass hut (they wouldn't dare), so I don't know why polkas should be hosted from a brewery.
I am thrilled that XM has a weekly polka show, and the show is really good. But it could be better.

I listened to Planet Polka most of the six hours last Thursday. Interesting stuff, but I didn't like the foreign-language (German, Polish) songs because of course I had no idea what they were saying.
I'm just a casual listener, so maybe there aren't enough English-language polkas to create a six-hour commerical-free show every week?
Anyway, my favorite polka was - "In heaven there is no beer". Too funny... _________________ XM - 3,000 watts of Rock and Roll from 22,223 miles in geosynchronous orbit |

I'm just glad it wasn't hosted from the rings around Uranus. Knowing XM, I'm sure it was passed around the discussion table.

To "22000", I sort of agree, about the foreign language stuff. The playlist has been pretty obscure. But I suspect that a good polka library was not a priority when XM was getting off the ground. If we keep talking up this show, we'll encourage XM to build the library.
On the other hand, I seriously doubt that any other radio station in the US is playing the music now heard on the XM 30 polka show. I don't know where they found all this stuff, probably cheap at some garage sale. As the modern polka library grows at XM, the oom-pah stuff will be forgotten once more. Too bad, I honestly feel it has some historical value.

| Whoa, this is too weird. Have you heard "Those Darn Accordions" 's song "They Came For Accordions" ? It's on the "Clownhead" CD. They play it on Special X. It's about aliens coming to earth and leaving with a bunch of accordions. Sounds perfect for the Pluto Polka Party! |
