Bernie's done. I wish he would've recognized that and retired, because Torre is going to trot him out there regularly even if he's hitting .001.

What do you mean? He's been pretty good this season. No he hasn't been the Bernie of old but he's surprised the hell out of me and a lot of other yankee fans.
And here I was thinking they might get through one game "bean" free but I guess I was wrong...

True but do you thing Georgie feels the same way? |
Yes, for two reasons. First, he made it clear to Cashman that the team isn't going to continue to operate with its payroll at its current level. Some of the contracts (Jeter, A-Rod) aren't going away anytime soon, but the team is going to try to replace high-priced veterans with cheap youngsters wherever possible. They got that last year with Cano and Wang. If Cabrera can come in and succeed, that's a very cheap player at what's normally a high-priced position.
Second, I think that George is finally getting sick of Sheffield's shit, especially now that he's gone into Operation Shutdown. Remember in his first year, when he had the nasty thumb and shoulder injuries, but played through serious pain? That obviously isn't going to happen now that the team hasn't picked up his option for 2007. If Cabrera (or another youngster, for that matter) can succeed, then there's no need to bring Sheff back next year. |
Where did you hear/ see that? I have to admit for the most part of the off season I thought the Yankees were going to do just that, cultivate the younger talent and then they swooped in and grabbed Damon. They couldn't go through one off season without a big signing. I think the Mets had something to do with that though because George can't stand to be upstaged.
I feel bad for players like Bubba Crosby. He thought he was the man and for how long? 2 months? And it was the off season...
You watch, lets say the Yankees tank and start to drop out of the playoff race (Yes I know its not going to happen but lets pretend). George will send Cashman out to find the highest paid guns he can find. And those prospects will find themselves out of NY in a blink of an eye. Its classic Georgie...

Now, I didn't say that they were going to turn into the Twins. They're always going to fill some of their holes with high-priced names. Now that Cashman is back in the driver's seat, though, they're going to be less likely to trade away their top prospects for fair-to-middling vets, which is what made them such in the 80s and early 90s.
Last season, Cashman made it clear that their top young guys - Cano, Wang, Duncan, and Hughes - were off limits in trade negotiations.

I like Bubba a great deal, but I can't really quibble with the Damon signing. Heck, I wouldn't mind seeing him get a shot every day in RF with Sheffield out. He's a better fielder than Sheff, has a decent enough arm, and plays hard, something that Torre appreciates.

I disagree. George seems to be in a mood similar to when he came back from his suspension, where he let his baseball people (Watson and Cashman) run personnel matters more than he did at any other point. If somebody knocks them over with a trade proposal (Willis for Hughes), they'll bite, but they're not going to trade, say, Duncan for Torii Hunter, even if things break down.

Georgie certainly wasn't happy with his third baseman's performance last night...
"As an angry Steinbrenner was climbing into the rear seat of his car, a Newsday reporter shouted, "Are you a little upset at Randy?" The Boss stopped again. "I'm upset at a lot of them," he snapped, then so there was no mistaking one of his targets, added a closing statement. "The third baseman!" "
Story here.

Good. He shouldn't be happy with his performance, and neither should A-Rod.

Yep. All Yankee fans can hope is that the Red Sox batters are tired from all that running around the bases last night.
