Not sure if there is already a Team Thread for the Braves but anyway

LaRoche has been traded to the Pirates for reliever Mike Gonzalez

I hate to see LaRoche go but the Braves needed better relief pitching.

PITTSBURGH -- After more than a month of speculation, the Pirates and Braves agreed in principle Wednesday to a deal that would send Pittsburgh closer Mike Gonzalez to Atlanta for first baseman Adam LaRoche, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

At least one prospect from each organization is also believed to be involved in the deal. The players must pass physical examinations before the trade will be officially announced by both teams.

By acquiring LaRoche, the Pirates will fulfill their primary offseason objective of landing a young, left-handed power bat for the middle of their lineup. LaRoche, 27, batted .285 with 32 home runs, 90 RBIs and an OPS of .915 last year in his third season with the Braves.

Gonzalez, 28, went 3-4 with a 2.17 ERA and converted each of his 24 save opportunities last year in his first season as a closer. There had been some concerns on the Braves' part about Gonzalez's health, because the hard-throwing southpaw was sidelined for the final month of the 2006 season by a sore left elbow.

The Gonzalez for LaRoche deal was nearly consummated during the Winter Meetings in December, but the Braves backed out of the trade when the Pirates would not add a second player to go along with Gonzalez. The two teams have remained in contact throughout the past month in an effort to come up with a transaction that was satisfactory for both sides.

I am listening to Home Plate right now and one person said that the 2nd person the Braves wanted was Chris Duffy

It is cool listening to 24/7 baseball talk this time of year. Smile

The Reds caught heat for trading two starting eight players for two relievers last year. We shall see how all the teams pan out. I still think the two pitchers the Reds got can still be good. (fingers crossed)

Former Braves announcer Don Sutton (now with Washington) is going to be on XM175 tonight. He was a "no show" last night.

This deal bubbled along during the Meetings as a 3 team trade with Gonzalez going to the Yankees, but the Braves wanted Melky Cabrera and/or Robinson Cano and/or somebody else the Yanks didn't want to deal. One of the guys the Yanks picked up in the Randy Johnson deal was Alberto Gonzalez who is said to be Gold Glove infield material and coveted by other clubs, but needs to bulk up his bat and would only be a UI, if that, for the Yanks this year. With 2B a question mark for the Braves, could the Gonzalezes be switching addresses? The Yanks would still have to add talent to the deal, but once again all the dealing they did this winter has surplussed them on the mound with prospects. I think we should stay tuned. Brian Cashman is vacationing in the Caribbean, but I bet he brought along his cell phone.

Braves have a 2 possible 2nd basemen that they can get from Minors; Prado or Kelly

I hope you're right, Walt. The guy the Braves really want apparently is Melky Cabrera, and if he goes it sets up a ripple in the Yanks roster that ends up with Bernie Williams coming back as 5th outfielder, and that wouldn't be good.

I mean they are the 2 people who the Braves used when ever Giles was injured, and that is who Home Plate says most likely will be at 2nd.
