Last night at around 9 et the 90's count was in 1994. Tonight it already has advanced to 1998. It quickily became apparent that the Billboard Top 100 chart was being used to compile the IT list.
For those who don't know, in 1994 & 1995 record companies stopped releasing singles for many top 40 records. Therefore many "radio hits" never charted on the top 100. It wasn't until 99 or even 2000 that Billboard began weighting airplay heavier for use on their top 100 chart. I think many of the hits from 96-99 have been missed on the IT list because of this. Also I've heard a ton of R&B records tonight (many I've never heard before) that I know were never that big on hit radio. I'd cite some examples of what's been missed, but I threw out all of my old copies of the Monitor (Billboard's sister publication dedicated to radio airplay only). Oh well fortunately, i have most of the stuff my self!

I'm still not sure how far they're going - if they're stopping at 1999, or going beyond 1999 into '00s. If the latter, then the question is do they go to 2002, or to some point in 2003?

I guess we'll see soon enough!

Because they are not including radio hits after the mid 90s is why the 90s version of IT sux compared to all the other decades. 80s was better than expected, so was 70s. 50s coulda used alittle more variety too, but they probably can't get all the cuts anymore.

Though I think that Kane, Girl 2.0. and Priestly are doing a great job with IT, their presentation is the weakest of the bunch mainly because the station is really only playing the big hits. That is why IT is shorter than on most of the decades' channels. I would imagine that they are relying on Billboard for their playlist. If the 90's would play some more obscure stuff it would be a lot better. But I give kudos to the DJ's - they are going a great job!

If IT on 90s was as big as it should be, IT would be there for weeks!

Some of the songs they are playing now I have never heard and basically suck. I can understand if they had little to no information to go on and if so then its the billboard's fault for not charting radio airplay.

I would be interested in seeing how different the 90s part would be if based on Radio and Records charts as opposed to the Billboard charts.

the problem with the v90s portion of IT is that it included the rise of R&R being a better source of what was played on the radio...Billboard is now primarily known as the sales chat while R&R tracks what is actually playing on the radio

Little known fact: R&R bases the charts on Mediabase 24/7 whitch is a subsidiary of Premiere Radio Networks whitch is owned by who? You guessed it, Clear Channel

I have said it before and I will say it again.

IT on the 90's SUCKS.

This is not the hits of the 90's the Urban slant on the 90's IT is increadable. Most of the songs I have never heard and I am a giant 90's freak.

Has anyone heard Hootie and the Blowfish on the 90's It? Very Happy

Hey I don't know maybe the 90's IT is playing all the 90's Hits maybe those hits were just not played here in Connecticut or something. I wish I knew the answer.

Good point about Mediabase! On there subscriber website you can go back as far as 1998 and look at music logs from many top 40 stations. BDS would have been a better bet for this list probably. I'm dissapointed that Kane didn't do the list based to the radio charts since he is the programmer for 90's on 9.

BTW: Does the usual 90's on 9 playlist include some of the stuff missed here? (ie: Hootie, all of the Backstreet Boys stuff etc..)? I'm a new XM owner and I'm afraid that many of the songs missed on the IT list are missed in regular rotation on the channel.

I think a number of the songs not in IT I've heard before on the channel... When live (11a-11p Eastern), the channel relies heavily on requests and not so much on playlists, so if it fits the decade, you should hear it.

I am posting here because I have heard that 'IT' will be replayed this month.. As a long time (1977) follower of the 'Hot 100' I was dismayed by the errosion of pop, rock and A/C and the domination of Hip-Hop on the chart thru-out the mid and late 90's. I therefore started tracking the airplay chart in Billboard and I am basically satisfied by it. It shows how disproportionate a factor sales is, in relation to airplay on the Hot 100. I don't object to most of today's R&B but for XM-9 to rely on this chart for this programming event is beyond me. They need to have a good sit-down w/the Ethel and Mix programmers and come up with a more defining list.

Uh Huh! what he just sed. I stopped listening to pop radio in the mid 90's because there was very little music being played anymore. I could never explain any way other than "that's what the record bigwigs want us to hear." And to find out that at the same time the charting services were weighted in a different manner would go a long way to explain why some of these "hits" were ever even played at all. I guess you don't need to have a good song if the execs say you're a hit.
