Have any of you tried calling in to the show? Have you made it through? I am driving a truck when it's on and cannot have a personal phone with me, so I have not. I'm wondering how tough it is to get through, since I hear some pretty lame questions at times, mostly about officiating: e.g. "How come the ref called (INSERT PLAYER FROM FAV. TEAM HERE) for hooking when he barely held (INSERT HATED PLAYER HERE).

I love the show, but some of the calls need work.

No personal cell phone, meaning I have a company-issued phone that can only call others on the same network. Besides, in this economy I'll keep my job working 55 hours a week, raking in the overtime, cell phone, or no cell phone.

Do they frisk you and check your bags before you get into the truck? How would they know if you have your personal phone with you? Do they have mics and cameras in the truck to check up on you? Sounds a little fishy to me, but then again I own my own truck so it doesn't effect me.

But on to your question about calls, name one show that has good callers. Most seem to have trouble either staying on topic, asking a question that was not answered about 5 min earlier or even having a point. Whenever any sports show starts taking callers i grab the remote and change the channel. That is why I like shows like the point and power play, no callers.

You've got me there. Some of the people who call In The Slot are OK; Gus, on Long Island is one. Pogey(Sp?) in LA, another. But, yes, most of the calls end up with someone hating on the refs.

Yes, I could bring a cell phone if I really wanted to, but truth be told, I'm part of the .0001% of Americans who does not own one.

Phoenix stays and no team in Hamilton. Thanks Gary. He always has a tame co-host too.

Good job Gary. You helped several Canadian franchises from leaving when the loonie was weakened several years back. Canadians feel they have a birthright to more NHL teams. If you don't live in Phoenix you don't know about the scheming owner who juggled money between his businesses. Paid his coach $8 mil and coaches' brother $2 mil for scouting. None of you really know the real finances so all you can do is speculate. Less American teams would hinder the league from negotiating a new American TV deal.

Juggled money between his businesses? George Gillett would like you to hush up... Actually, I doubt he's anywhere to be found near Montreal.

Believe me, we know all about that owner. He's a saint compared to the owner the NHL chose who didn't have the money for the team. Wait... That could be Boots Del Biaggio in Nashville (who started selling corporate suites for the Kansas City Predators before Balsillie was selling Hamilton tickets), who borrowed money from 2 other franchises with no intentions of repaying them... Or that could be John Spano, who was also approved as an owner for the Islanders (and the Dallas Stars, go figure!), but never even bothered obtaining the money to cover up his shortfalls.

Maybe if TV networks didn't see deserted arenas like Phoenix's, there wouldn't be a struggle between Versus and DirecTV over even showing the channel that the NHL has staked it's entire American presence on. Maybe then they could actually be more than just an early spring reruns novelty on NBC. But instead, the league has to suffer this embarrassment of having plucked a team from one of the noisiest arenas in the league to the quietest arena in the league, just so they could get ridiculed regularly on the Colbert Report and other comedy shows about no one giving a damn about the sport.

The good news (unless you're a player) is, with salaries tied to revenues, the cap is gonna drop like a stone next year when only 29 teams have any revenue. Then small market teams that actually HAVE fans will be able to watch competitive teams.

BTW, he paid his coach $1 million. He paid the only hockey guy the city's ever seen that's even had any remote success $7 million to be the face of the franchise. Gee, not even the greatest player in the sport's history could save them. So where they gonna play next year? Vegas? KC? Hamilton? Winnipeg?

Actually they will be playing in Phoenix with new ownership. I've been to games at 15 different buildings in the NHL and the crowd in Phoenix is louder than the ones in NY, Toronto and Vancouver where the suits occupy a lot of seats. Vancouver is the quietest of the three.

It seems only people in Phoenix are saying that... Experts (or at least ones who know how to run successful businesses) all say this is the last season for the team in Glendale. The city won't relent on the lease (and just threw away $25 million to boot... are they just allergic to money?), and all of Bettman's saviours walked away when they realized Glendale is a money-losing location. Reinsdorf is looking at Vegas. Ice Edge is partial to Saskatoon, though don't rule them out for Southern Ontario if the owners of the CFL's Toronto Argonauts are involved.

You know, the loudest games in Toronto the last 2 seasons have been the preseason game where the Leafs filled the entire arena with only free tickets... Seems free tickets can be pretty loud... Or just the sound booth.

Reinsdorf will be back. He didn't want to participate in the circus that Ballsillie and Moyes created. He lives here a good part of the year and has many business interests here. With a new cost structure he will be successful. The revenue side will eventually work itself out. There will be a second team in Phoenix before there is one in Saskatoon.

Ah yes. Jerry Reinsdorf. Gary Bettman's trusted friend and fraternity brother. All the stars are lined up for him to keep hockey in Phoenix. Or not.

Can't argue with the obvious. Kudos to you on the astute observation, sir.
