Because Bob Moke had to leave XM to take care of an "emergency situation", his "Moments To Remember" program has been canceled, and the early '50s MOR hits that he featured are no longer part of the channel's regular programming. Here, for your amazement and amusement, is the updated '50s On 5 playlist---1120 songs so far and I continue to add to it.

For several months the channel pretty much ignored Kay Starr, Teresa Brewer, Frank Sinatra, Joni James, Patti Page, Nat "King" Cole, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Eddie Fisher, Jo Stafford, the Four Aces, the Ames Brothers, the McGuire Sisters, and many other MOR artists who had top-ten hits in the '50s. In July 2009 the channel started playing maybe one song an hour by these artists. Big whoop. They also dropped all the Beach Boys and Four Seasons songs. At least there are still a lot of low-charting and non-charting songs. '50s On 5 focuses on the latter half of the decade and completely ignores dozens of big artists. Golly gee, that sounds just like '60s On 6!

One big surprise on '50s On 5 today was Chubby Checker's first chart single, "The Class", in which he impersonates other singers performing "Mary Had A Little Lamb." Chubby even attempts Elvis Presley and the Chipmunks! You can hear the song at good ol' YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTW7suUh4ic

Thomps, hate to ask for more work, but could you do an "old 50's - the new 50's" list somehow so we can see how many songs actually disappeared? If it isn't as easy as an Excel "this spreadsheet - that one" don't worry about it.

The problem here seems to be Zellner and whomever else is involved in decades programming are too young to have remembered what radio was really like from the 1930s to the 1980s. There are a few people in the industry and like some of those posting here that were exposed to a generation of music by their parents or others and do have a lot of knowledge that seems to continue to escape Zellner.

With no respect at all intended, Jon Zellner is a snot nosed, still wet behind the ears kid when it comes to having a perspective on radio before 1980. He's under 40 folks, knows nothing of previous eras. Was never in touch! If he were a good manager/leader he would be smart enough to surround himself with those who have the knowledge he doesn't. Whether it was he or Mel who orchestrated the dismantling of a unique organization we'll never know. What we do know is far too many of the subscribers who visit these forums are not exactly happy.

The good news is if one runs the stations categorized as "Oldies" or "Nostalgia" on Radio Locator there seems to be a trend among both AM and FM broadcasters working hard on getting it right. Are they are reading these forums and working to reinvent terrestrial radio in an attempt to take listeners away from satellite radio? Let's hope so. One thing is for certain with the internet and G3 networks it is possible to listen to most of those stations rather easily whether at home or in one's vehicle thanks to so many of them now streaming via Surfernetwork. Is the sound quality up to what some think it should be. No, but then neither was/is radio whether AM or FM.

I've found a mix of these more innovative terrestrial stations that are streaming on the internet I personally like and it is highly likely when it is time to renew with SiriusXm, it won't be happening unless there is a major change backward in decades programming to what it once was.

tvguy, my list for the post-merger '50s On 5 was nowhere near complete; it's at http://xmfan.com/viewtopic.php?t=98646 The list for XM's original '50s channel is at http://xmfan.com/viewtopic.php?t=85874&highlight= and is much more completerer. Hmm...that word doesn't look quite right. Anyway, the early '50s MOR hits were a regular part of the original '50s channel. Now we have to listen to the '40s channel to hear them, just as we have to listen to the '50s channel to hear the early '60s hits...and the '60s channel to hear the early '70s hits. Hang on a minute---I'm going to look up the definition of "decade."

I just added 30 more songs from the past few hours and I'm feeling just the teensy-weensiest bit encouraged: '50s On 5 played three MOR hits, proving that such songs haven't completely disappeared from the playlist. They played two number-one hits, Perry Como's "Hot Diggety" and Nelson Riddle's "Lisbon Antigua", plus Cathy Carr's "Ivory Tower."

Oh boy, I finally got around to adding some more songs to the list. But two of the songs I heard today are Hi-Heel Sneakers and I Wanna Love Him So Bad, both from 1964. The '50s channel has always played through 1963 and no later. Howcum now they're playing songs from '64?

I have heard many songs from 1964 on 50s on 5-- Suspicion- Terry Stafford, Hello Dolly- Louis Armstrong, Leader of The Pack- Shangri-las, You Don't Own Me- Lesley Gore, Last Kiss- J Frank Wilson, My Boy Lollipop- Millie Small, Love Me With All Your Heart- Ray Charles, Come A Little Bit Closer- Jay & Americans, We'll Sing In The Sunshine- Gale Garnett, Java- Al Hirt, Surfin Bird- Trashmen, LEt It Be Me- Betty Everett & Jerry Butler, Um Um Um Um- Major Lance, Goin' Out of My Head- Little Anthony, Navy Blue- Diane Renay, It Hurts To Be In Love- Gene Pitney, Stop & Think It Over, Dale & Grace, Its Over- Roy Orbison, My Heart Belongs To Only You- Bobby Vinton, Diane- Bachelors, Save It For Me- 4 Seasons, Hi Heeled Sneakers- Tommy Tucker, Ask Me- Elvis, Peopel Say- Dixiecups, Funny- Joe Hinton, Right Or Wrong- Ronnie Dove, Saturday Night At The Movies- Drifters, Walkin' In The Rain- Ronettes and others. It is more the sound of the hits than the years they were popular in as to where they get played, and in many cases they get played on both 5 & 6. I am just glad they are getting played, even if I have to push the button.

Well, all of those 1964 songs that have been played since January are now on the list...but I doesn't likes it! I still believe that a channel called "'50s On 5" should be playing the '50s and not the '60s. If the '50s and '60s channels want to ignore years and play songs that fit a certain "sound", then the names of the channels should be changed. Thank you and good night.

Speculation time.

When I programmed an oldies station in the mid-70s, we focused on 55-75. (The KOOL FM approach was basically the same. Cool )

We did not load up on the Mitch Millers, Perry Comos. But we did play R&B, doowop, Brits, surfers, soul, rockabilly, folk rock, Motown, etc.

It is possible there is a SXM transition going on here? ,,,phasing out 60s on 6 for a KOOL FM type single channel with 55-70 material? You know, a mixmash of Carl Perkins "Blue Swede Shoes" followed by "In The Ghetto" by Elvis and "Venus" by Shocking Blue and "It's My Potty" by L. Gore (Good times and great oldies! Zell FM!) ?

There's a lot of sixties hits already on 50s on 5. Example:

60s on 6 is almost designed to be difficult to stomach---playing the same songs over and over. It is almost like they are trying to drive it out of favor and chase away the fan base.

You know, a mixmash of Carl Perkins "Blue Swede Shoes" followed by "In The Ghetto" by Elvis and "Venus" by Shocking Blue and "It's My Potty" by L. Gore (Good times and great oldies! Zell FM!) ?

That'd be nice -- certainly better than the current KOOL FM concept (disco, early-1980s pop, "Brown Eyed Girl", lather, rinse, repeat).

60s on 6 is almost designed to be difficult to stomach---playing the same songs over and over. It is almost like they are trying to drive it out of favor and chase away the fan base.

Zellner and his drones are utterly convinced that the only human beings on the face of the Earth who dislike this approach are a few dozen message-board whiners. (Never mind that implementing their approach across both services has resulted in the first overall drop in active subs on a quarter-over-quarter basis in satrad history. Pure coincidence.)

When even the loudest voices against the changes on the decades channels -- this board's regulars -- aren't pulling the big switch and abandoning SiriXM entirely but instead cancelling a relatively insignificant family sub or two, it makes me doubt seriously that this issue has much to do with the subscription slump at all. If even XMFan "whiners" are remaining subscribers, what are the chances that the casual decades channel fans are bailing out? Not very good.

More likely, the slump is due to a combination of historically low car sales, people losing jobs and eliminating luxuries like satellite radio from their lives, and people deciding they'd rather listen to music they know they'll love all the time with no interruptions via an iPod than put up with satellite radio's unpredictability, DJ gab, and incessant self-promotion.

I like about six channels that have very deep playlists. I get these on DISH and may drop my last paid sub at the end of the month.

The SXM value is about 50% of the value of XM to me.

enLighten has over 3000 selections (I have the list).
Bluegrass Junction over 1400 selections.
Symphony Hall several thousand (improvement over XM Classics)
Bridge mixes a moderate list very well. Not bored yet.
70s on 7 is getting better.
Real Jazz has a great playlist and Latin Jazz on Friday nights.

My issue has been with Soul Street, 60s on 6 and Beyond Jazz departures. I miss LUNA too. Too bad.

I believe they are gone forever, just like Fizzies, Bosco, and Pontiacs.
