Too bad that XM didn't get Matt to fill in for those 50's on 5 DJ's that are on Vacation this week.
They got other people to do it. WHY didn't they get Matt to do it and then they'd really know that they need to put him back on full-time.
They should have never let him go 2+ years ago.
50's on 5 hasn't been anything like it used to be. |

You can still hear Matt the Cat in the 50's on 5 audio promo on the XM Canada website. They are really behind the times - sound bites are way before the merger.
Click on the Play button on the page to hear a blast from the past:

>sigh< I really miss the old XM... | Me too. Late at night this coming Monday, January 3, will make exactly six years since I first decided to give XM a three-day trial run on the internet, and I didn't need half that time to know that I would sign up full-time and get my first radio within a week. That night, Channel 5 was playing its portion of the 2004 IT broadcast. They did twelve-hour segments and then repeated them before going on to the next twelve hours. Since the 1950s portion of IT was sixty hours at that time, it took them five days to finish and immediately thereafter they had a six-hour tribute to Elvis for what would have been his seventieth birthday. What a way to get initiated. |

The Friday Night Cat Fight takes on one of the most popular, most covered and best selling songs of all-time with “Unchained Melody.” Originally, it was written for the 1955 motion picture, “Unchained,” but after Les Baxter released an instrumental version of the tune on Capitol and it hit #1, it became one of the biggest songs of 1955, with versions by Al Hibbler and Roy Hamilton topping the R&B charts and charting top 10 on the pop lists. We'll also feature some very unique and heartfelt renditions of “Unchained Melody” by Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps (1957), New York's Vito & The Salutations (1963) and the mega-selling 1965 Righteous Brothers classic.
So listen and then vote for your favorite version of “Unchained Melody.” With over 500 covers of this tune, I couldn't feature them all, but I think all six that are featured here are worth your time.

| The Friday Night Cat Fight Podcast takes on flu season with this classic rock n’ roll tune. We return to the original two song Cat Fight format as Huey “Piano” Smith & The Clowns’ 1957 original version of “Rockin’ Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu” takes on Johnny Rivers’ top 10 version from late 1972. Who’s got the hotter fever? Who’s got the colder chills? Who’s lunch is coming up first? You decide by listening to this week’s Cat Fight and then voting for the one that gets you the most sweaty. Marlene H. Dortch, Secretary
Federal Communications Commission
Office of the Secretary

They need to be told how we think the merger is going so far |

They need to be told how we think the merger is going so far | I'll be doing the same. They don't deserve another increase after the decrease in quality listening they have "provided" after the merger. |

They need to bring Matt and Ken back to the 50s whenever! The station has been going down the spiral since mid '09, and Bob Moke left the station. It's become as boring as Sirius-XM Gold with the FM format hurting the other stations. _________________ Human Neuman (The FM puppet) and Jonathan Schwartz need to be taken off of 40s on 4--bring back Marlin! |

The Day The Music Died Cat Fight - 2011
The Friday Night Cat Fight Podcast honors the 52nd anniversary of “The Day The Music Died,” that terrible plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson).
There will be 2 separate Cat Fights this week.
The first is over a tune that was written by J.P. Richardson and originally recorded by him. His buddy George Jones covered it in 1959 and made it his first of MANY #1 Country singles.
The second Cat Fight is between Robert & Johnny and Ritchie Valens over the tune, “We Belong Together.” Robert & Johnny co-wrote the song and took it to #12 on the R&B charts, but Ritchie puts a heartfelt touch to the tune and makes it all his own.
Plus, the podcast also contains a little tribute to Buddy Holly, whose loss is still very much felt today.
Listen, vote and dig!

The Friday Night Cat Fight Podcast presents a great uptempo number to git y’all on the dance floor, “Shake A Tail Feather.” Who better to get ya shakin’ it, than the original 1963 version by the Five Du-Tones? Or maybe you prefer the biggest hit version of song from James & Bobby Purify from 1967? It’s possible that Ray Charles’ version from the “Blues Brothers” film is the one that tickles your tail feather. Voice your choice! Listen to the Cat Fight and then decide if it’s one of the hits or one of the lesser-known versions by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels or Ike & Tina Turner.

I don't really think you all are doing this cause any good. XM/Sirius management cares very little what you think about the service. As long as enough people subscribe to pay their big bonuses.
But it's kind of cool that after 50+ pages of posts, you all are still defending Matt the Cat from his being fired and reminding everyone that XM's current version of "content" is a giant autopilot sucking machine. Why anyone still pays for their inferior radio is beyond me.
What's funny is that XM is so cheap that they'd rather people write 50 pages of message board support than just admit they were wrong to be that cheap and just hire him back. I bet his salary as a parttime non-celebrity DJ wasn't even more than like $50,000 (probably much less actually as XM is known for being cheap unless you are Howard Stern or Oprah). Just 300ish subscribers would've paid to keep him on the service and it would've made the channel better for everyone nationwide as obviously he was a good DJ. I don't think anyones ever said anything against his DJ abilities. It was just a cost cutter move.
300 subscribers x $12/month x 12 months: $43200
To put that another way, it would have taken only 6 subscribers in each state (300/50=6) to pay Matt's yearly salary probably. And that's not worth it to XM to pay for you to enjoy better radio. So why exactly is XM charging $12/month again? |

The Friday Night Cat Fight features a classic vocal group record this week with “Dedicated To The One I Love.” The song was co-written by the “5″ Royales insanely talented guitar player and songwriter Lowman Pauling in 1957. His group cut the original version of the tune without much success. The Shirelles made a slight dent in the charts in 1959 with the first release of their cover. In 1961, everything changed. King re-released the “5″ Royales’ original and it scraped the charts, but that prompted the Shirelles’ label to re-release their version and it shot to #3 on the charts. In 1967, Mama Michelle got her first lead vocal as Dunhill Records issued the Mamas And The Papas version which hit #2. Many others have covered this classic tune, but these three versions stand out as the best and most popular.

| This week, The Friday Night Cat Fight is a battle royale between 4 distinguished crooners over the classic, if not eerie tune, “Nature Boy.” Nat King Cole scored the first and biggest hit in 1948, but Sinatra and Haymes each had top 20 versions of the tune also in ’48. Bobby Darin brought it back to life in 1961 with a slightly different take on it musically and today, “Nature Boy” is a jazz standard. Vote at Mattthecat.com |

| The Friday Night Cat Fight presents “Good Rockin’ Tonight,” one of the most important and influential songs every recorded. Three versions are in contention with week, with the tune’s author, Roy Brown leading the pack with his original version from 1947. Wynonie “Mr. Blues” Harris and Elvis Presley also take a shot at the song. Wyonie’s went to #1 on the R&B lists in 1948 and Elvis’ version helped to spark the “Rock n’ Roll Revolution” of the mid-1950s. Vote @ www.mattthecat.com |

The Friday Night Cat Fight takes on one of the most rockin', hot burnin' rockabilly sides of all-time, "Red Hot." But the tune didn't start out as a rockabilly barn burner. It began as a cheerleader's chant "Our team is red hot," which was turned into a mid-tempo R&B tune by its writer Billy "The Kid" Emerson. He cut his original for Sun Records in 1955, the same label that would issue Billy Riley's immortal version in 1957. Also in '57, the great Bob Luman cut a cover of "Red Hot" for Imperial Records. We round off this week's competition with Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs 1966 stab at it, which went to #82 on the national charts. Then in 1977, Robert Gordon took the tune back 20 years to its rockabilly glory with his rendition, which hit #83 nationally.
So, which version of "Red Hot" is TRULY RED HOT? You decide. Listen to the Cat Fight Podcast and then vote for the one you dig the most in our online poll. www.mattthecat.com |
