XM is holding a press event next week announcing new hardware, but I have the scoop on what is to be announced.

First up, a new color-screened XM Radio. This radio will feature the same screen as the XpressRC, only will not feature pause/replay or SongSaver recording. This is the first radio to feature XM's new FM modulation technology, which is replacing the current SureConnect system. The new technology is built into the car power cord and will utilize your vehicle's wiring as an FM transmitter wire. This radio, packaged with a vehicle kit, will sell for $80.

Quote:
The Sirius XM FMCLA adapter serves the dual purpose of providing power to Sirius XM satellite radios from a vehicle’s 12 volt cigarette lighter socket, while simultaneously injecting into the vehicle's wiring harness an FM modulated signal of approximately 200 KHz bandwidth, which is a part of the down converted and decoded RF satellite signal. With this arrangement, the vehicle's wiring harness effectively becomes an antenna transmitting in the FM band of 88 MHz – 108 MHz.

Next up, an iPod Touch/iPhone radio. The XM SkyDock is a docking station for your iPod Touch or iPhone that turns it into a SATELLITE XM Radio receiver! Included is an XM antenna, power cord (also featuring the new transmitter technology), and docking station that turns your iPod/iPhone into an actual XM Satellite Radio receiver using the SiriusXM app. This may be the biggest breakthrough in satellite radio technology to date, and could possibly bring in millions of additional subscribers. This SKYDock kit is expected to sell for less than $100.

Finally, a new XM signal repeater will be announced. Like the older Delphi repeater, it will also be in the 900MHz spectrum, so you will still not be able to use it with portable radios. Nothing amazing with this product announcement. Simply a replacement to the discountined Delphi repeater.

Official announcement coming next week.

Yes, it is an impressive product. Turns out XM's R&D hasn't been asleep after all.

The SkyDock sounds great, and I am really glad to see they are finding a way to integrate the iPod Touch/iPhone with Satellite radio...will that be merely a unit for home use, or will it work in a vehicle as well?

I am also glad to hear there is much work being done in the R&D department to improve existing technologies and expand into arenas that are currently in play, like the iPod Touch/iPhone.

If I had one wish, it would be to make a repeater antenna that will work with portable devices to create a virtual terrestrial network. That in my mind is one of the missing links for antenna technology, besides an antenna that will work within any type of structure, but I know that may still not be feasible for a portable device.

Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for the quick response...next question...it will work with the SiriusXM App...will it cost the normal monthly subscription fee, or will it be considered part of the "online" service?

I'm hoping the latter, but I won't hold my breath.

I don't have any details. You'll have to wait for the official release on that one, but if I had to guess, you would pay the regular service price since technically it's a satellite receiver that picks up satellite channels.

The iPhone is just a controller for an external tuner though isn't it? That's the ONLY way it could work as the iPhone/iPod touch doesn't have an integrated tuner. The iPod could ONLY be a controller and audio processor.

The new FM mod will that be backwards compatible with the SureConnect MOD system? In theory it should be since the FM signal is sent along the ground of the XM radio. (meaning the signal is sent on both the ANT and POWER jack and LINE OUT.)

Will this mean the iPhone app will be able to record XM and replay like the XMp3?
