Next year Mike Love will be 70; Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston will be 69; David Marks will be 62. Yikes! Let's hope they can duplicate their sound of the 1960s. First, here is the big news of the reunion:
Beach Boys To Reunite For 50th Anniversary Show
Chris Cope, spinner.com, July 22 2010
The Beach Boys have revealed plans to stage a 50th anniversary show next year. The exact date and location of the gig are not yet confirmed, but it's rumoured the gig might be free.
And guitarist Al Jardine has hinted that there might actually be more than one show: "We're definitely doing at least one show. It's a big deal. I don't know where it will be yet, but it'll probably be free. Golden Gate Park was mentioned, as was the National Mall in Washington DC, and the north shore of Chicago by the beach."
Not wanting to do things lightly, Jardine mentioned that he wanted to see the line-up -- including Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and possibly early Beach Boys guitarist David Marks -- embark on a world tour too.
He added, "I want to see a 100 date anniversary tour. I want to go all around the world, but if this is the way it has to be, then so be it. We're going to have to rehearse one hell of a show. My point is, if we're going to rehearse and make this such a wonderful show, we should take it on the road."
Second, here is big news for fans of Brian Wilson and/or George Gershwin: Wilson and writing partner Scott Bennett recently completed two George Gershwin songs that were left unfinished when Gershwin died at age 38 in 1937. The new CD, Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin, comes out on August 17 and includes the two "new" songs, Nothing But Love and The Like In I Love You, along with lots of Gershwin standards such as I Got Rhythm, Rhapsody In Blue, and They Can't Take That Away From Me. Hurry and go to Amazon and order it! |

I thought there were still lingering, serious legal issues between Mike Love and Al Jardine. Wonder if this is some pipe dream of Al Jardine's? 100 performance world wide tour? Being an old geezer about the same age as those guys I've got a real picture of them actually doing something like that.
I will be looking forward to Brian Wilson's new album, my being a big fan of both he and Gershwin. Brian Wilson is an unbelievable song writing talent. George Gershwin was a master. His "Rhapsody in Blue" is possibly the best musical score ever written beyond some created by Handel. _________________ "The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first." |

Hey, if the Hatfields and McCoys, who began feuding in 1878, could finally lay aside their differences in 2003 and sign an official peace treaty, then maybe Mike Love and Al Jardine are friends again as well.
When I saw the "Beach Boys" (and Weird Al Yankovic) at the Antelope Valley Fair in 1999, there were two "Beach Boys" groups on tour, one led by Jardine and one led by Love. This show was billed as "Beach Boys Family & Friends" and featured Al Jardine, Daryl Dragon ("The Captain") on keyboards, and Brian Wilson's daughter Carnie on backup vocals. Despite having only one original member, the group still sounded pretty much like the Beach Boys...so think how good a group with three original members will sound...unless 70-year-old men no longer sound like 25-year-old men.! |

I've heard snippets from several of the tunes on that cd and all I'll say is that Brian Wilson IS a great songwriter and at one time WAS a damn good singer. |

Golly gee, those Beach Boys are in the news an awful lot lately! This is from the New York Post:
Beach Boys Take On Katy Perry's Gurls
9:36 AM, August 5, 2010
Reps for the Beach Boys are threatening to sue Katy Perry after she included their classic line, "I wish they all could be California girls", in her song California Gurls.
Rondor Music has fired off a letter to Perry's label, Capitol Records, demanding Mike Love and Brian Wilson -- who penned the 1965 classic California Girls -- be given a writing credit on Perry's hit summer song, as well as royalties.
A record industry source told Page Six, "Rondor Music has sent a letter to Capitol on behalf of Mike Love and Brian Wilson, saying Katy has cribbed one of the most famous lyrics in history, so Love and Wilson should be entitled to a writing credit and a portion of the royalties."
The legendary line is uttered by Snoop Dogg at the very end of Perry's track, which has sold more than 3 million copies, making it the anthem of the summer.
Although sources told us that Wilson and Love asked Rondor to take action, reps for both musicians claimed it was Rondor's idea. Wilson's rep said, "Rondor owns the track and called Brian and Mike, saying they were going to complain. Brian likes Katy's record and doesn't know where the situation stands." Love's rep said, "Mike and Brian wrote the song, but any legal action is up to Rondor." |

This will end up with a cash settlement to Randor (Mike and Brian will be lucky to see more than a dollar two ninety-eight each) and all future releases of the recording will have the Snoop Dog ending cut out. Snoop should have known better, he's obviously not the village idiot! _________________ "The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first." |

| Brian Wilson has a new CD of Gershwin tunes coming out on August 17 and---surprise---it's available on Brian Wilson's website, http://www.brianwilson.com/ and Brian Wilson will also sell you one of 300 Brian-Wilson-autographed copies. In 1966 Brian Wilson wrote a song called Hang On To Your Ego. Does it seem that Brian Wilson in 2010 has a big ego? Or maybe he deserves to have a big ego. Who wants to debate? |

Oh boy! Only a year and a half after the Beach Boys announced plans to reunite for a 50th anniversary tour in 2011, they just announced they'll reunite for a 50th anniversary tour in 2012. The goodest news is that Brian Wilson will take part...and they'll record a new album.
Brian Wilson reuniting with Beach Boys for new album, tour in 2012
Jim Harrington, Oakland Tribune, 12/16/2011 01:53:57 PM PST
Beach Boys fans have been saying for years: Wouldn't it be nice if Brian Wilson would reunite with the rest of the band.
Well, that's about to happen.
The troubled genius, who last performed with the band in the mid-'90s, is certainly the most significant ingredient to the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary plans. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group, one of the most beloved acts in pop music history, has announced that it will record a new studio album as well as tour in 2012. The trek will be a 50-date international tour, kicking off in April at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. No other dates have yet been announced. The tour marks a half-century since the release of the Beach Boys' debut, 1962's Surfin' Safari. Besides Wilson, the reunion features early/founding members Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks.
Both Wilson and the Beach Boys (led by Love) have remained active, though separately, on the road in recent years, performing '60s surf-rock favorites for fans at wineries, theaters and festivals. Their reunion certainly marks one of the big stories in popular music for 2012. "This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again," Wilson said. |

| I'm wondering about something. The Beach Boys did a 50th anniversary tour in 2011 and they'll do another 50th anniversary tour in 2012. Do you think they'll do yet another 50th anniversary tour in 2013? And were none of the Beach Boys ever any good at math? |

The Beach Boys — Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks, who have not performed together live in more than two decades — will reunite on the GRAMMY stage and join current GRAMMY nominees Foster The People and Maroon 5 for a special performance.

| Did you know the Beach Boys are the group who has had the most Grammy nominations---seven---without a win? But there's a solo artist who has had twelve nominations without a win. I'll give you a tiny hint, and I don't think this will give it away: she used to be the lead singer of the Supremes. If you need another clue, let me know. |

Jean Terrell was a very underrated singer. Loved her lead vocal on "Up the Ladder to the Roof." |

| On that aforementioned Grammy Awards telecast, February 12, the Beach Boys will perform Good Vibrations after Maroon 5 does Surfer Girl and Foster The People do Wouldn't It Be Nice. The Huffington Post wasn't very respectful; an anonymous writer said that the Beach Boys are "completely redefining the use of the word 'Boys.'" |

Several people posted video of the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations performance on YouTube. Some of the videos have already been removed. Let's hope this one remains online: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j75-ZHc5onA&feature=related
But why did the Beach Boys start the song with the chorus and leave out the intro? Can't Brian hit those notes anymore? |
