Let's see. What are my entertainment options for Monday August 1st?

A) Listening to the MTV Relics reminisce about changing the world, and becoming the mega-celebrities they are today;

B) Watching some cranky senator bitch & moan on C-SPAN;

or

C) Reading decade-old copies of Soap Opera Digest in a doctor's office full of screaming snotty-nosed children.

This is a tough one. I'd have to go with either B or C. The first option is too boring and painful.

Pat Benetar? Obviously there is no quality control on their press releases either.

Yes, and they'll probably play songs by Howerd Jones, Thomas Dulby and Men Without Hits.

Whenever I hear the MTV Relics channel, it's like somebody from a dollar store has been put in charge of Macy's.

3david, what's worse is that they think they're really getting Rick Springsteen.

I find it strange that they are having a big 3 day MTV 30th Year Birthday event and this big MTV Birthday bash is only showing... on VH1 Classic. Sad

From Sirius Buzz:

Sirius XM Wants Their MTV

July 25, 2011 (5:50 pm) Spencer Osborne

It was just 30 years ago that MTV launched, and Sirius XM is getting ready to celebrate in style. The satellite radio company will roll out the original MTV VJ’s which are now DJ’s on Sirius XM’s 80′s on 8 channel. Martha Quinn, Alan Hunter, Mark Goodman and Nina Blackwood will recreate the first 5 hours of MTV.

To celebrate the event Sirius XM will have special guests including Pat Benatar, Eddie Money, Rick Springfield, Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and more, including the airing of Phil Collins “In The Air Tonight,” Blondie “Rapture,” and the first video ever played on MTV, “Video Killed The Radio Star” by the Buggles.

“The ‘80s on 8 30th Anniversary VJ Special” will air on MTV’s 30th Birthday, Monday, August 1st at 7:00 am ET with a replay at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm on ‘80s on 8, channel 8.

So in other words this is voicetracked too? Rolling Eyes
Funny, makes you wonder then if they were all in the same studio when they did this.

They've probably been recording bits & pieces to use for this for quite a while- I'll bet every guest DJ or any other 'in studio guests' that have been on the Big 80's in the last 2 years, were asked to do a plug for this, so they wouldn't have to scramble around putting this together at the last minute.

There is no way they will recreate the first 5 hours as they actually happened.

I have the first 24 hours on DVD-R's that I acquired from a collector. I've been watching them this week to celebrate MTV's 30th birthday. MTV was SO great in the 80's. It was a miracle of television and changed the world. I literally asked my parents for cable TV for YEARS nonstop (probably daily) just to get MTV. We didn't get cable until 1985 or so. It was so sad. When we finally did get it, I recorded tapes of MTV nonstop. I would've recorded it 24/7 if blank VHS tapes weren't so expensive. I remember them being like $6!! Sad

Back to MTV's first hours, they include songs I've never heard before such as "Bluer Than Blue" or "When Things Go Wrong". No way. But that's cool. Any MTV anniversary special is better than none at all. I am even considering travelling to Alabama to attend Alan Hunter's MTV 30th birthday party thing.

As for MTV's VJ's being on Sirius, it's only thing that makes me want satellite radio. The rest of it can easily be replaced by Internet radio thats free. But I'm not going to pay $10+/month to hear Martha Quinn again even if I sometimes consider it. I do listen to Nina's show on free radio.

I would be interested in hearing the MTV anniversary special. If anyone records it and posts it somewhere online (as they did the last MTV anniversary special on satradio), please let us know where to find it Smile

So in other words, I don't want to pay to listen but I will gladly let someone else pay for it so I can listen for free.

Exactly, and totally honest about it. I do not intend to ever pay Sirius or XM for their brand of mediocre radio. I prefer live interactive radio, or very well produced and super entertaining radio like some national shows (such as "Backtrax USA"). XM/Sirius is just a jukebox with cookie cutter Clear Channel like liners thrown in and some generic voicetracking.

If I could just sign up for a day for about a buck or so and not have to hassle with cancelling via phone maybe I would but it'd be just as easy to get it from somewhere else on the Internet as I do Howard Stern's daily show (when I want to hear it).

Actually, I guess I could just sign up for the online trial or something and record it myself. I just hope I wouldn't have to call in to cancel.

Don't forget, J.J. Jackson will be exhumed to celebrate with the rest of the MTV on-air voice-tracked zombies.

There - had to say it before 'rude' did!

With all due respect to the late Mr. Jackson, I can think of several deceased folks who would be just as entertaining, if not more so, than the MTV Relics.

I would love to find that. I only have the first 4 hours.
