Is the extra cost (mucho $$) associated with the direct connection (PIE/Blitzsafe) worth it as opposed to the direct FM Mod connection? That is, is the sound worth it?

Like everything else , it depends. If you want the best possible sound in your living room , then the answer is YES. If you are driving down the interstate at 8o mph you probably won't know if you have the best sound or not.

One more thing , XM is more about the content than about sound quality. The sound quality of my commander in the car with fm modulation is about equal to an fm station . Hope this helps!

Actually the decision can go beyond just sound quality. It also depends on where you live and how many other radio stations are within your range. I just purchased the Roady and a wireless modulator. However, after 5 minutes of use I realized this was worthless in my area as all the stations the wireless units send to, bleed through. I've gone ahead and ordered the PIE adapter and I have disconnected my antenna while I wait (this makes it useable).

My advice. Get the wireless modulator and try it out. If it doesn't work than return it (like I am going to do) and get the PIE adapter.

You don't "have" to. It depends on if you get engine whine mixed in. If you do than you probably want one otherwise no need.

PIE adapters are available in the XM Fan Store:
http://shop.xmfanstore.com/pieauxinad.html

If you want to shop around, you can do a Google search or visit PIE's web site: www.pie.net

They are priced the way they are because they are more than just simple cables and connectors. They include electronics that simulate a CD Changer for the particular vehicle the adapter is designed for.

XM radio sounds like a badly compressed mp3. Go with the direct connect option. I dont know why people even bother with fm modulation, there is no point. Look at some service manuals and find the audio input pins and solder in some RCA or a phono connector and you wont pay the expensive price. If my only option was fm modulation I wouldn't even bother putting an XM radio in my car, it's such a waste. I laughed at those early cd changers with were fm modulated, just a complete waste. With a direct connection, you'll hear how it sounds like a badly compressed mp3, but then again, according to actorny, <sarcasm>it's more about content than sound quality</sarcasm> which means he's trying to tell you that it sounds like a badly compressed mp3, but you get variety that sounds like a badly compressed mp3.

EmumanXM has experienced a badly compressed mp3 sound. I'm not an audiofile so I don't know a badly compressed mp3 sounds , but I do know that my commander 's sound is pretty good: at least as good as my reg fm b' cast without any sarcasm. Try it w fm modulator ,if unsatisified add direct or pieauxin.
