"Content Protection" is the word the Recording Industry is using to limit the recording features of digital radio hardware, including XM, Sirius, and HD-Radio. The Subcommittee hearing will be held this Thursday, Nov 3rd @ 2PM.

http://judiciary.house.gov/oversight.aspx?ID=202

The RIAA's proposal regarding recording of digital radio:

Quote:

(8) by inserting after Section 114(j)(15) (16) "Permitted recording"
means recording of a performance licensed under this section where technological measures used by the transmitting entity and incorporated into the recording device

A--

(A) permit recording only of specific programs, channels or time periods as
selected by the user in increments of no less than thirty minutes duration,
where no more than 50 hours of recorded material is stored at any one time,
and recorded material is deleted or otherwise made inaccessible on a first-in,
first-out basis;

(B) do not permit recording or playback based on information concerning specific sound
recordings, artists, genres or other user preferences;

(C) do not permit the automated disaggregation of the copyrighted material
contained in any recording of a transmission program;

(D) effectively prevent access to the recorded material other than as
described in this paragraph; and

(E) do not permit the redistribution, retransmission or other exporting of
recorded material from the device by digital outputs or removable
media.

This could pretty much put an end to any future XM hardware that allowed timeshifting and recording such as the current line of XM2go's.

Below is a list of members in the Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property (which is holding this hearing). Call them, email them, fax them. Let them know the Recording Industry is trying to put an end to your fair-use recordings!

Yeah

Do you suppose it also will affect the XMPCR s ability to record digital content unabated? I kinda think not, at least not right away.

I just finished reading how some Sony cdroms have malware type layers imbedded, apparently without asking anyone if it was cool; I won't buy another cdrom untill I know what's up.

It seems like they want to infect everyones MP3's with a switch, etc. Screw them; I think the government should stay out, and they should keep the Sony's of this world out, of our computers.

I just started buying a lot more discs since they lowered the price, and now this imbedded bs plus dictating how we use the radio. I remember them going through all these hoops first over cassettes, and then so-called digital signals from FM broadcasts years ago; every time the RIAA's have lost, and yet they are omnipresent for each new technology launch.

I wake up at 5 am and I see this? I have never been so pissed at an organization before in my life. Trying to limit development on new technology. No more than 30 minutes of recording? Most of my mixshows I listen to are two hours long. They are impeding my ability to enjoy content at my convenience. Shit, why stop at (satellite) radio? Why not TiVo too? Shit, restrict every form of recording possible. What's next? CD's that I can only play for 30 minutes at a time? I could keep going but I have to go to work.

FUCK THE RIAA!!! This is the last fucking straw.
