Exxon Chairman Gets $400 Million Retirement Package Amid Soaring Gas Prices

April 14, 2006— Soaring gas prices are squeezing most Americans at the pump, but at least one man isn't complaining.

Last year, Exxon made the biggest profit of any company ever, $36 billion, and its retiring chairman appears to be reaping the benefits.

Exxon is giving Lee Raymond one of the most generous retirement packages in history, nearly $400 million, including pension, stock options and other perks, such as a $1 million consulting deal, two years of home security, personal security, a car and driver, and use of a corporate jet for professional purposes.

Last November, when he was still chairman of Exxon, Raymond told Congress that gas prices were high because of global supply and demand.

"We're all in this together, everywhere in the world," he testified.

Raymond, however, was confronted with caustic complaints about his compensation.

"In 2004, Mr. Raymond, your bonus was over $3.6 million," Sen. Barbara Boxer said.

That was before new corporate documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that revealed Raymond's retirement deal and his $51.1 million paycheck in 2005. That's equivalent to $141,000 a day, nearly $6,000 an hour. It's almost more than five times what the CEO of Chevron made.

I saw this story a couple days ago on the news. All I can say is, corporate scum. Tell me again why the government allowed the merger of Exxon and Mobil please. Fuckin' greed bastards, and those republican probably benefitted him quite nicely. Gas prices are never going to be below 2 bucks a gallon now, because "they" have convinced American's that. Everything will be going up in price, because the bulk of materials, and goods are delivered by truck. Diesel fuel hasn't gone down in price either. When was the last time minimum wage went up? Bend over and get ready to take it, without lube.

Glad I drive a 4 cylinder, I have to chuckle when I see an Escalade, Taho or a bigg ass ford filling up of how much his gas bill is, as I have better things to spend money on.

If you don't have a problem with what Clear Channel is trying to do to XM then you shouldn't have a problem with the oil companies. As you said it's "simple business matters".

Filled up today at Mobil since their prices are usually higher. $3.09 for 93 Octane, exactly 19.403 gallons. Total $60.13. Should last me until Friday, Saturday I'm taking a trip to the Bass Pro Shop outside of Syracuse, 350 Mile round trip, being mostly interstate driving on I90 I should only have to fill up once on my way back.

I don't. Driving is my hobby, I work 50-55 hours in 4 days and relax on the weekend by taking long drives and discovering new places in the general area. Labor Day week nearly $200 went into my tank in 6 days, and back then I only filled up on 87.

$3.00/gallon, bring it on! That Friday of Labor Day weekend I went for a job interview and passed a Mobil, 93 was $4.07. Too bad I just filled up Sad

To me, it's an extra 20 bucks a week
In the scheme of things, It's no big deal.

Same here. I sacrificed a while ago by going with an apartment 5 miles from work rather then a house 40 miles away. So I spend about 20 bucks a month in gas, well probably near 30 now once I have to fill up again.

Yup, nice days I can bike to work and I can go home for lunch. Why the hell would you want to live so far away?

The convenience where I normally buy gas had $500 in drive-offs in 45 minutes, now it's all pre-pay. Pretty soon there will be an armed guard at the pumps. Laughing

Yeah thats one reason i never pay cash for gas pre paying is a pain because you never know exactly how much its going to cost to fill up. Much easier to use credit or debit at the pump.

Yeah he was, and before that a 4Runner, and I think before that a Jeep.

I have to laugh when I see people selling their trucks and SUVs on the side of the road, and then going out and buying a new more fuel efficient car. Now they have a car payment and they're probably paying close to the same if not more per month for that more fuel efficient vehicle. My neighbor just did this exact thing, and I couldn't help but to laugh.

It's not a big deal, I certainly haven't adjusted my driving habits for the increase. I get a laugh when people are saying they won't be able to go on vacation because they have to spend a few cents more per gallon on gas. If you're worried about paying a few more dollars for gas, you shouldn't be going on that vacation in the first place. Of course that's just my feelings. I'm not giving up my SUV any time soon.

I was but I discovered the quality problems they are having, and kind of killed it for me., that and I'm aiming a little higher in quality and shooting for a Toyota truck and I want to get a Lexus GX 470 long term goal of mine, as I get older I will want more confort.
