I never really got into listening to trance music on XM 82 until the very early part of this year. Thanks to Zoltar and Armin Van Buuren I have been hooked. If I recall correctly I remember hearing that Above & Beyond's "Air For Life" was named the #1 trance song of 2005. I could be wrong.

Is there an official chart or list that keeps track of this genre as does Billboard etc?

If so does anyone have any insight as to which trance tunes are leading the way for 06?

Armin does an end of the year show with the top 20 tracks of the year based on web voting. This is the only Trance chart I have ever paid any atttention to. Above & Beyond vs. Andy Moor - 'Air for Life' was the number #1 track of 2005. There are various attempts at weekly charts scattered on the web and I think a few top 5 contained within some of the shows. Dance Music isn't that hung up on charts.
