XM Announces SureConnect Technology

As I have mentioned before, all future shipments of the RoadyXT, Audiovox Xpress, and AGT Sportscaster will have the wireless FM modulator REMOVED. (If you want an older version with the wireless FM modulator, buy one NOW from www.xmfanstore.com )

XM's new SureConnect Technology requires you to "clip" on a small dongle around your vehicle's outside FM antenna. Your new version radio will then send the FM signal along this wired route to your car's FM antenna. You can then listen to your XM through your FM radio as you did before. Only now, there is no chance of your FM broadcast to bleed over to the cars next to you. If you don't have an external FM antenna on your car, don't worry-- it's also compatible with on-the-glass FM antennas. If you have a retractable antenna, or a roof-top antenna, XM's new SureConnect technology is NOT compatilble with your vehicle.

Why use SureConnect? The FCC has been cracking down on both XM and Sirius regarding their FM modulators being too powerful. Sirius' solution was to simply lower the output of the FM modulator. This may be a simple solution, however the modulator is so weak, you can hear a lot of static and interference. XM's answer to the FCC issue was to create SureConnect. You will still hear XM through your FM loud and clear, only now you will need to connect a dongle to your antenna.

How do I know if the XM Radio I am about to purchase has this new technology? Please look at Page 1 below. New radios and vehicle kits will come in completely new Red and Black packaging, branded with the XM Radio logo.

Attached is the 4 page information sheet regarding SureConnect.

Here is the installation manual for SureConnect:

They are referring to the FM anteanna. The Buicks and most GM use the roof-top for OnStar and XM only, the FM antenna (just like my Honda) is indeed part of the back window-- the ~38% group.

My Jetta did have a rooftop FM antenna, however.

So does this improve reception if we use the FM mod in my car, or is this just something that they are doing to keep the FCC off their back?

It will definitely help, I'm actually wondering if I can get one aftermarket for my Inno as right now I use my Inno in the car only for MP3/recorded use and don't want to have to use a full-blown XM antenna for nothing (my car has XM built-in and I prefer the OEM setup since it's Navi)

I'm also curious if you can get one after-market...in other words, can I get one for the Inno to improve the FM mod reception I get?

you can use an FM Direct on your Inno. That will work better than the SureConnect solution

you plug this external breakout box into your radio's XM antenna port. The wire coming out of this box connect's to your vehicle's FM antenna. You also connect your XM antenna to the Antenna Input jack of this same box.

you can see a graphic of this at the bottom of page 4

Ryan the problem is I have a Taurus and the antenna connection is in the trunk of my car. So, I would have to run a wire from the front of the car, where the Inno is located, to the trunk where the antenna connection is located, and back up to the front of the car where the Inno is located. Not really a feasible solution and it sure isn't going to look very good. So
a. Is there a better way to do this then what I am understanding, or
b. Can this SureConnect be bought seperately?

the FM antenna doesn't plug into the rear of your car stereo? There has to be a connection on the rear of the stereo somewhere...
