Mad Men," the acclaimed and award-winning series set in the glamorous world of Manhattan advertising in the 1960s, returns for season three on Sunday at 10 p.m. on AMC. This gleamingly smart and sexy show is up for 16 Emmys for its sophomore season. Fans know all that. But if you're watching for the first time, here's a cheat sheet that'll tune you in to the main characters and story lines.
DON DRAPER (JON HAMM)
The brilliant ideas man at the Madison Avenue advertising firm Sterling Cooper, Don excels in the workplace but not as a husband or father. He's smart enough to maintain control at the agency after it is taken over by a British firm, but can't seem to find himself spiritually. After repeated trysts, Don is trying hard to remain faithful to his unexpectedly pregnant wife, Betty, but temptation lurks around every corner, including a business trip in Sunday's season opener.
BETTY DRAPER (JANUARY JONES)
Don's beautiful, fidgety and unpredictable ex-model wife kicked him out of their suburban dream house and spent most of season two fuming about outrageous betrayals and the remainder fretting about her unwanted pregnancy. In a brazen act of revenge, Betty got soused and had sex with another man, just before inviting Don home and telling him they're expecting. The shock waves from her reckless romp and her inherent restlessness aren't likely to be quieted in their tentative reconciliation.
PETE CAMPBELL (VINCENT KARTHEISER)
To say that Pete is a good guy would be like calling Simon Cowell cuddly and soft-spoken. Young, ambitious and completely void of morals, the slimy account executive has tried to blackmail Don and had a sexual fling with Peggy, the ambitious copywriter. Meanwhile he has struggled to start a family with his devoted wife, Trudy. Pete's still reeling from a wakeup call delivered by Peggy, who broke the news to him in the season two finale that she had his baby and gave the child up.
PEGGY OLSON (ELISABETH MOSS)
A dowdy but brainy girl with undiscovered talent, Peggy learned how to swim fast in this shark-infested pool of misogynistic ad men. She rose from secretary to copywriter and finally received her own office in the season two finale. A fast learner when it came to office politics, she has shown herself to be foolish and out of her depth in her personal life. She was in such denial about her pregnancy, she didn't acknowledge her condition until the minute she delivered. Last seen saying her prayers, Peggy appears to have unburdened herself of guilt now that she revealed to Pete the existence of their illegitimate child.
JOAN HOLLOWAY (CHRISTINA HENDRICKS)
As savvy as she is curvy, this super-hot office manager once had a torrid affair with senior partner Roger Sterling. She has also seen her dreams dashed by the professional limitations imposed on women in the early '60s. She excelled at proofing TV scripts, but was passed over for that job in favor of a man. Joan's dreams of marrying a doctor hit a bump when her physician fiancé forced himself on her in Don's office. Major professional and marital decisions await Joan.
ROGER STERLING (JOHN SLATTERY)
A partner in the recently sold Sterling Cooper agency, the end of season two saw this inveterate skirt-chaser leaving his family for Don's hot-cha-cha secretary. That surprise move didn't sit well with Roger's wife and daughter, or, for that matter, with Don. Upheaval at home and work will doubtless occupy much of his time. Don't be surprised to see this man-boy, who never knows when to say when, indulge his passion for three- or four- or five-martini lunches. Heart condition be damned!

Funny that you posted this as I am having a Mad Men marathon starting Friday at my place. My friends just gave me the ok that they are coming over. Might do some Mad Men themed drinks to go with the viewing.
