The Moment Is Now: At $199, Xbox 360 Invites Everyone to Play
Microsoft announces new, low prices for Xbox 360.

Last update: 6:00 p.m. EDT Sept. 3, 2008
REDMOND, Wash., Sept 03, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Imagine if friends and families had the ability to instantly watch movies from Netflix, live out their musical fantasies through "Rock Band 2" (Harmonix/MTV Games) and "Lips" (iNiS Corp./Microsoft Game Studios), star in their own Hollywood classics with "You're in the Movies," or have the power to never miss the latest episode of "Heroes" -- all from one device, starting at $199(1). That device is Xbox 360, and Microsoft Corp. today announced it will offer the gaming and entertainment console, which offers the leading Xbox LIVE service, at a new low price in the United States. Beginning Sept. 5, Xbox 360 Arcade will retail for the estimated retail price of $199.99, the Xbox 360 console for $299.99 and Xbox 360 Elite for $399.99.

"We are thrilled to be the first next-generation console on the market to reach $199, a price that invites everyone to enjoy Xbox 360," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "Xbox 360 delivers amazing performance at an extraordinary value with the leading online service and best lineup of games, downloadable movies and TV shows available from a console. The majority of consumers make the decision to buy consoles once the price falls to this mark, making this an important milestone for consumers and the industry."

History shows that more than 75 percent of all console sales happen after the price falls below the $200 mark. For millions of consumers who have been waiting for the perfect time to buy an Xbox 360 console, their moment has finally arrived. At $199, Xbox 360 is the most affordable next-generation console on the market, offering something for everyone with the most dynamic, interactive entertainment experiences available.

Even though Microsoft made it very clear at E3 that the Wii was not competition to the 360, they have clearly dropped the price to compete.

The good news is that because of this you will see the Wii drop to $199 also for this Xmas season.

Now if Sony would just drop the price of the PS3 to that level, all would be well in the world. $400 is still too much even though it does play blu-ray.

Is the red ring of death issue totally fixed yet?

That, and their monthly fee approach to on-line use, are the issues that put it at the bottom of my list.

I hear the new chips run cooler, making it less likely to happen, but I've not heard whether they've changed the design, so I doubt its been fixed, and it gets a 3 year warranty on it.

I have been playing online for quite a long time. Since the 300 baud days on my Commodore. I get why people don't like to pay to play online, but it is worth it for xbox live in my opinion. Plus, there are enough free month cards running around out there (just about every new game with MP has them) that you could probably play free for quite a while. Hell, at the least the free month cards give you a chance to see whether the service is worth it for you.

How is the Xbox Live Gold service better than Sony's free online multiplayer service?

You said you don't know why people don't like to pay to play online. I'm asking why do you think someone should pay when they can do the same for free?

I didn't say I didn't get it. Read my post again.....

I'm perfectly fine with people not paying. In fact, if I had the choice with Live, I wouldn't pay either. I like playing for free on my pc, and if I had a PS3, I'm sure I'd love playing on it for free.
But I do find that for me its worth the money. The service works, updates come fairly often, it has lots of good features, lots and lots of downloads, and I've never had a major problem with it. It does suck that it costs, but that's life.... and that's why you get a choice whether to use the service or not.

No, not fixed. However, Microsoft is very good at getting your XBOX shipped out and then back to you if you experience it. Most of the repairs are free too.

That's what I've been asking you for 3 days now. Why do you think the Xbox Gold service is better than the PS3. You said you don't understand why people baulk at paying for the live service, but yet you just did yourself.

I never said whether it was a better service or not. Like I said in one of the earlier posts, I think that the fee's are worth it for the service you get, and that if it WERE free, I'd rather not have to pay for it.
Its the same with XM, I think its a good deal for what your getting, but I'd rather have it for free than pay for it....who wouldn't?

I also didn't say that I didn't understand why people didn't want to pay for it. For 3 days I've been trying to explain this to you, yet you keep ignoring that fact that I did not said what your saying I said.

And I can't really comment one way of the other on Sony's online plans, or service, because I don't have a PS3. If its better, so be it. I just pointed out some of the things I like about Live's service, not things that I think are wrong with any other service.....
