In November 2008, XM's '70s channel in effect became the Sirius '70s channel. The playlist shrunk by two-thirds and several months later many number-one hits still hadn't been played; a few number-one songs have been played only as part of that fershlugginer "Jukebox Of Cheese" feature, which is very disrespectful to the music we grew up with. In August 2010 somebody decided to change the feature to "Jukebox Of Dyno-Mite." That's an improvement??? The playlist has been gradually expanding lately. The list is up to 990 songs.

Well gee Thomps, Roberta Flack only had the #1 song for the entire year of 1972 per AT 40 ("First Time Ever I Saw Your Face") AND the #4 song for all of 1973 ("Killing Me Softly With His Song" as written by Lori Lieberman about a Don McLean concert but I digress), so why in the world should they play those? It's not like they were big hits or anything. Rolling Eyes

Now that I've got the sarcasm out of my system, I'm wondering if Bread, The Carpenters and so forth are going to be largely relegated to The Bridge? Being an XM sub, I've never heard The Bridge, but if they're using the Sirius 70's playlist on 70's on 7, that would explain it somewhat. But....if it's going to be a true Decades channel, it needs to play the entire decade. And completely ignoring a group like Bread is inexcusable.

Oh yeah, back to Don McLean for a second: I heard him in concert once. Incredibly arrogant, refused to play "Vincent" or "Driedel" (psst, hey Don, it's not like you had so many hits you don't have time to play all of them) and actually had the temerity to say something to the effect of "I'm going to play what I want to play and if you don't like it too bad." To say he was arrogant would be putting it kindly, and I've heard directly from those who had to work with him over the years that it's not an isolated impression. So I don't know who Lieberman was watching - maybe she got him confused with James Taylor or something. Wink

'70s On 7 plays only one Don McLean song. Any guesses?

A '70s channel that ignores certain artists is kinda like a '50s channel that ignores 1950 to 1954 except during one certain program...or a '60s channel that seldom plays anything from before 1964.

Acap posted a list for The Bridge at http://www.xmfan.com/viewtopic.php?t=93191 and then yours truly filled in all the chart data. It was truly a joint effort. (Insert marijuana joke here.)

Thank you very much. Good looking playlist. I see no Bread on there either - have the Carpenters and Bread been strictly restricted to SiriusXM Love perhaps? Or were they on "Movin' Easy" and therefore no longer exist in the SiriusXM world at all?

The Bridge is similar to the "mellow rock" format that aired on KNX-FM (now KCBS-FM) in Los Angeles from 1971 to 1983. It emphasized folk-rock, a category that Bread and the Carpenters obviously ain't in!

Just checked - per Whitburn, the Carpenters were #4 for the entire decade of the 70's. And Bread had twelve Top 40 hits, including the up-tempo "Let Your Love Go" (I was surprised to see that it peaked at only #28 - that's definitely a lost 45) as well as "Mother Freedom", although that peaked at only #37.

I'd be interested in the explanation on this one. The more I think about it, I'm guessing they had relegated them to "Movin Easy" and haven't gotten around to adding them to the 70's playlist. But if the explanation is, "well, you can hear them on AT 40"....sorry, that doesn't cut it, not when they were among the major hit makers of the decade. Having said all that, XM's 70's on 7 didn't exactly play a lot of Carpenters either, and I realize they present a risk of tune-out. But so does "LeFreak" by Chic. And probably a 1000 other examples as well. And here's a great example of a channel changer - "Boogie Oogie Oogie" is playing on 70's on 7 as I type. Yecch. And maybe this is some of the "FM mentality" not yet being adjusted - unlike terrestrial, if a listener doesn't like a certain song and changes their radio to another SiriusXM channel as a result - it doesn't matter.

The mellow 70s hits were played on Movin' EZ on Sirius, not the Bridge. And now Movin' EZ is gone ( along with Lobo, Carpenters, Flack, Bread , Olivia...etc). I am ready for the Bridge to come back, and wish Movin' EZ was on that list too... the Blend doesnt go that far back it seems. Keep emailing the 70s channel/programming that the 70s are missing a huge amount of hits... Zellner might listen (yeah sure). Cool

Thanks, that list pretty much sums it up. (Although I'm surprised to see Too Much Heaven on there, that's one I didn't think they'd played). You can also add on Have You Never Been Mellow by Olivia which starting getting airplay in the last 10 days. When you factor in that a few of those songs have been played exactly once since the merger (Bridge Over Troubled Water,Too Much Too Little Too Late, Morning After, You Light Up My Life), it's even worse than it appears.

I don't understand it. Did some "focus group" tell them that the channel would crash and burn if Three Times a Lady, Killing Me Softly With His Song,Time in a Bottle, and Close To You were aired once a week? I realize that in order to squeeze those songs in, Night Fever and Bennie and the Jets might have to be scaled back to six spins a week, but we all have to make sacrifices.

It's funny, when XM aired AT40, it was great to hear songs from 20-40 that you wouldn't hear otherwise. Now, we've got songs in the Top 10, Top 5, even Number One that you don't hear otherwise.

Mister 70s Fan, I added that Olivia Newton-John, along with "A Little More Love", which has been played once in the last two months...so Olivia is another artist who is being slighted. Here are some more bizarre examples: since the merger, every big Steely Dan hit has been played, except for "Doctor My Eyes"; and Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Lean On Me" were played a few times in November but not in December, and "Use Me" hasn't been played at all!

I just added 37 more songs to the list---hurry and go look! A few were from the Disco show, although Joe Causi plays mostly disco-oriented songs that were big pop hits. Where are all the club hits? Whoops, I forgot---the new Sirius XM goes for only the biggest "mass appeal" songs.

"Doctor My Eyes?" Isn't that a Jackson Browne song?

Personally, I think the XM/Sirius gurus are WAY overthinking these Decades channels. All of them should be playing ALL the things that were popular at the time on Top 40 radio. Sure, maybe give "You Light Up My Life" and "Honey" a few less spins than everyone else, but just play the music!

Even behemoths of boredom like KRTH play Bread and the Carpenters. You shouldn't have to go to some mellow music "ghetto" to hear them on XM. It was the great MIXTURE of music that made Top 40 interesting. I remember in 1977 buying 45s by Abba, Bee Gees, Paul Simon, Glen Campbell, Foghat, Ram Jam, Foreigner, Styx, the instrumental Star Wars (classical and disco versions)...

And what's interesting, to go off topic here a bit, is that those 45s cost 99 cents each - the same price as an itunes song today!

I had to pay $2.00 for a 45 at the Goodwill...I got ripped off.

I just added 20 more songs to the list. There are now 578! Wowie-zowie! And wait till you hear this: one of the songs I added ("Young Americans") wasn't even a top-ten hit! Whoo-eee!!! And if they can play "Afternoon Delight", why can't (or won't) they play anything by Bread?
